1904-11 QV De La Rue Tall Stamps Thick 'POSTAGE' Crown/SA Watermark 6d blue-green vertical gutter pair Imperforate Horizontally
Between ACSC S42ba (SG 284a), both units with minor marks on the face and ironed-out diagonal creases, some uneven/shortish perfs at right, lightly mounted, grossly under-catalogued at $1000 (£5000 by comparison). The Imperforate at Base error - of
which five examples are recorded - is catalogued at $2000. The ACSC states that "One vertical gutter imperforate at base of the upper stamp and at the top of the lower stamp [ie. two missing rows of perforations] is recorded. This pair, from the
second printing, is somewhat damaged and discoloured". We are unsure whether this is the pair referred to by the ACSC. Gibbons describe SG 284a as "Imperf. between (vert pair)", which we take to mean between adjacent stamps, not stamps across a
gutter. However, the ACSC does not list such an error for this issue (only for the Crown/A Wmk issue that follows), so we take the Gibbons listing to refer to this item. Absent from the Gary Diffen, Dr Don Pearce & Harry Lower collections, and
possibly unique. (Image1)

S58b (SG 288b), characteristic rough perfs some slightly uneven, small hinge remainder across both units, Cat $4500 (£4000). The ACSC states that "Four pairs can be traced, one of which is in the Royal Collection". Dr Don Pearce's pair - ink notation
in the margin; lightly mounted - sold at our auction of 9.11.2022 for $2242 (Sale 249 Lot 1398). (Image1) (Image2)

1904-11 De La Rue Tall Stamps with Thick 'POSTAGE' 10/- light olive-green ACSC S72 (SG 291) unlisted shade mint, postally used and
CTO (with virtually full original gum) singles, the mint & CTO stamps with old hinge remainders, Cat $900 (£565) for the normal shade. Bill Purves at pages 185-186 discusses the discovery of four examples and inclines towards them being an "error of
colour", printed in the same shade as the 3d. However, others have questioned this. In a footnote, the ACSC states "There is still some controversy ... but it is generally considered that the stamp is a colour changeling". We have observed that the
mint stamp is in a paler and more yellow shade, and that stamp may indeed be a colour changeling. Necessarily offered 'as is'. (3)
