1842 lengthy Scottish social entire headed "Hutchesontown 30 May 1842" & signed "Your affectionate Sister/Isabella Nisbet" with
post scriptum "I finish this letter on the 29 of June at Rutherglen/this is number 2", to "Rev Henry Nisbet/Tana" carried per favor with no postal markings but docketed on arrival "Glasgow/May to June 42/Isabella", remarkably fine: superior to the
four 'Santo' 1841-42 unstamped entires that sold for an average of $980 each.
The London Missionary Society established a mission on Tanna Island in 1840. Rev Henry Nisbet was based on Tanna 1841-43 only, after which he relocated to Samoa. There was no post office in the New Hebrides until a NSW Postal Agency was opened on the
southern island of Aneityum on 1.8.1891. On 20.6.1892, it was relocated to Port Vila, about 500km NNE on Efate. (Image1) (Image2)

tied by multiple fine to very fine strikes of the 'PORT VILA POST/NEW/19JUN98/ HEBRIDES/ANH CO LD' cds, another strike tying New South Wales Jubilee 2½d violet, minor toning. The lack of any transit or arrival markings suggests the cover was not put
in the mails. (Image1)

1902 social cover to Scotland with New South Wales Jubilee 2½d indigo tied by largely very fine 'NEW HEBRID[ES]/6NO/1902/VILA' cds
(day slug before month slug), the reverse with superb 'GLASGOW/ DE29/02/=20=' arrival cds, endorsed on the reverse "[sen]t by Dr John Paton/...", two light vertical folds. The 'Santo' 1907 cover to GB sold for $2800: see Lot 313223.
John Gibson Paton (not a typographical error) was the first of three generations of Presbyterian missionaries in the New Hebrides. He arrived at Tanna in -.11.1858, endured numerous dangerous situations, was absent for many years to raise mission
funds, returned in 1867 & retired to Australia in 1881. Anti-French & anti-slavery, he urged Britain to annex the islands. He made several later visits to the islands & died in 1907. His brother, James, authored Paton's so-called 'Autobiography'
(London, 1889). His sons, Frank Hume Lyall Paton and Frederick James Paton, were born on the island of Aniwa & continued the mission work in the islands. FJ's nephew, Wilfred Paton, continued their work. (Image1) (Image2)

1907 social cover to County Durham with New South Wales 2d ultramarine tied by largely very fine 'NEW HEBRIDES/10AP/1907/VILA' cds,
light but obvious 'DARLINGTON/MY28/07' arrival backstamps, light horizontal & vertical folds. Ex 'Santo': sold for $2800. RPSofL Certificate (1987). An important postal history item: this is probably the earliest (and only?) 2d-rate cover from the
NSW Agency period. The 2d letter rate (and 1d postcard rate) was approved 4.7.1905 but not implemented until -.03.1907. New Hebrides is not in Richard Breckon's Australian Postal Rates Guide list of Empire destinations to which the reciprocal 2d rate
was applied, but this cover provides empirical evidence that it was included. (Image1) (Image2)

1907 usage of New Zealand PPC with the message headed "HMS Prometheus/Vila/New Hebrides/Aug 12th 07", to Devon with Great Britain
KEVII 1d cancelled at London OC5/07, minor blemishes. In 1906, Britain & France declared the New Hebrides to be "a neutral territory", with ships of one or the other nation visiting in alternate months. This is the latest of only four items recorded
from British ships under these arrangements. John Gibson states it was carried in a naval bag, firstly per Burns Philp 'Tambo', arriving 26.8.1907; then per P&O 'India', arriving Brindisi 2.10.1907; then by train. See also the previous lot. (Image1) (Image2)
