1860-61 Small Star Clean-Cut Perf 14 at Somerset House 1d rose-carmine (not "carmine-rose") SG 12, excellent colour, a couple of
short perfs & cut from the sheet at top & left to preserve the design, with superb part-strike of the Perkins Bacon 'CANCELLED' Handstamp, Cat £10,000. This is Position 1 from the original block of 6: see 'CANCELLED' by Peter Jaffé at page 55, where
Position 1 is not recorded. This stamp was apparently discovered only in 2018. Ex 'Dubois' (Part IV) - where erroneously listed as a "proof" - sold for SFr4880. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2018).
Six similarly defaced stamps from many Colonies were gifted by Perkins Bacon to Rowland Hill's nephew Ormonde Hill, an egregious lapse of judgment that saw Perkins Bacon lose their stamp-printing contracts. Peter Jaffé's example - Position 4 - sold
for $14,950. (Image1)

1858-59 First Rouletted Issue 2d pale red Printed on Both Sides SG 15a with the 'reverse' inverted relative to the face, rouletting
at left & cut from the sheet to largely preserve the design, neat GPO cds in blue, Cat £950. Gary Diffen's similar example sold for £480, and Don Pearce's stamp with the 'reverse' oriented the same as the face, sold for $895.
Rouletting of these issues was effected with hand-held wheels & the accuracy of the process was only as good as the clerk's hand-eye coordination. Stamps with roulettes clear of the design on all sides are rarely encountered. Many stamps were cut
from the sheets using scissors on one or more sides in an effort to retain most if not all of the design. This is not so much a 'defect' as a consequence of haphazard workmanship. It was standard practice for sheets of stamps that were underinked,
printed at an angle, or with otherwise unacceptable impressions, to be turned-over and printed on the other side. In this instance, the reason for the re-printing is not obvious: the impression on the 'reverse' is well-defined & correctly orientated.
Gary Diffen stated that there are only three examples, all used, in private hands, plus two others in the Royal Collection. We support his comment that this stamp is easily confused with the similar error in the Second Roulettes (SG 24ab). (Image1) (Image2)
