OVERPRINTED 'OS': 1887-90 Overprinted 'POSTAGE' in Blue £1 mauve & claret overprinted 'O S' Type 1 SG O38, poorly-centred as
always, small closed scissor-cut at lower-left, untidy Sydney duplex cancels, Cat £19,000. RPSV Certificate (2002).
This is the rarest face-different stamp of all the Australian Colonies and the Commonwealth! Only nine examples - three unused and six used, one of which is in the Royal Collection - are recorded. On this basis it should be worth more than the
Queensland Two Corners 6d ($25,000+) of which some 18 examples are known. Absent from such important collections as John White, 'Carrington' (Mark Dankin), Sir Gawaine Baillie, 'Chartwell', 'Besancon' and 'Dubois'. Sold at our auction of 5.8.2021 for
$20,365 (Sale 245 Lot 490). (Image1) (Image2)
