GAVUTU: triple-oval 'L.P.P.L./10NOV1907/GAVOTU' light but legible large-part strike in violet on Large Canoe 1d red (rounded
corners). The most complete example of one of the rarest & most desirable Solomons markings, and the only example with a clear date. *FKS107*, from an enhanced illustration at page 79 of Harold Gisburn's book. John Darnell recorded only eight
examples, including one poor strike on cover *FKS127*. Gavutu is a small island, only 3km east of Tulagi Island. Coconut plantations were operated by Lever's Pacific Plantations Ltd. The office datestamp was used as a canceller before the post office
opened in late-1907; closed 1914. Gavutu was a repatriation centre for islanders taken to Australia during the infamous 'blackbirding' operations (effectively slavery), and subsequently deported home between 1906 & 1908. (Image1) (Image2)

HIS MAJESTY'S GOVERMENT YACHT 'BELAMA': 'HMGY BELAMA/13JUL23/BRITISH SOLOMON IDS' two light but obvious strikes on KGV ½d & 1d on
cover with oval 'BURNS PHILP SOUTH SEAS COY/ FAISI / LIMITED' imprint in blue on the flap, to Sydney. The 'Belama' was in service between 1911 & 1921, when it was wrecked on Santa Ysabel. It was replaced by the 'Ranadi', on which this cover was
apparently posted. Faisi, near Shortland Island, was part of German New Guinea but was never developed by the Germans. In 1895, the island was sold to Nicholas Tindal who later mortgaged it to Burns Philp, to whom ownership passed in 1906. During
WWII, Faisi was the first of the Solomons Group to be occupied by the Japanese. Ex Ray Baldwin, Robert Taylor and John Darnell: sold for $2016.
