1734 c image1860 (Jan 19) soldier's letter endorsed "From John McIntosh Sapper Royal Engineers" and countersigned "LE Lockhart/Lieut RE/Officer Commanding/Royal Engineers", to Scotland with Perkins Bacon 1d deep rose-red SG 5a (margins good to large with a fragment of the adjoining unit at left, minor tonespots; Cat £300 x3+ on cover) tied by poor triangular cancel, the reverse with light Cape Town cds in red & Edinburgh arrival of FE29/60 (Leap Year). One of the most attractive Cape soldier's letters we have seen. Brian Trotter in 'Southern African Mails' at p531 states that an additional fee of 2d for letters sent beyond the Cape was repealed "sometime between December 1858...and February 1861." This item shows that the 2d fee was withdrawn at least 13 months earlier, making this a very significant item. (Image1) (Image2)

1736 c image1863 (May 30) British mercantile entire to Cape Town underpaid with Small Letters 6d only (small tear in the wing-margin) tied by 'LONDON EC - 90' duplex, rated "1/6" but with largely very fine strike of the British 'DEFICIENT-POSTAGE 6d/HALF-FINE 6d} 1/-' handstamp, poor Cape Town arrival backstamp in red, central vertical filing fold. Brian Trotter in 'Southern African Mails' at p234 states that until 1877, the postage due on such an item was the 6d deficiency plus a 1/- fine = 1/6d. He makes no mention of the half-fine procedure. (Image1) (Image2)

1737 c image1866 (Feb 16) British cover to "Colonel Dennis [?] 99th Regt/Natal/Cape of Good Hope" with 1d red x2 & Large Letters 4d tied by 'HASTINGS - 342' duplex, largely very fine strike of the British 'DEFICIENT-POSTAGE 6d/HALF-FINE 6d} 1/-' handstamp, repaired tear across the flap. At the time, the standard postage was 1/- but there was a concessionary rate of 6d for a letter to an officer, as here. The taxing is therefore questionable. Brian Trotter in 'Southern African Mails' at p234 states that until 1877, the postage due on such an item was the 6d deficiency plus a 1/- fine = 1/6d. He makes no mention of the half-fine procedure. A rare survivor from the last Frontier War, a 10 month campaign that formally ended 29.6.1878. Pulleines Rangers was a poorly-regarded local force of mostly railway labourers & diamond mine workers.
