1747 c imagePOSTAL HISTORY: 1914 Maritz (Boer) Rebellion OAS cover with largely fine strike of the huge 'A.C.F./Ref No.../SEP 27 1914/[QUEE]NSTOWN/INFANTRY RE[GIMENT (FIRST EASTERN RIFLES)]' ('ACF' = Active Citizens Force) datestamp in violet, to East London with Capetown transit on the face, minor blemishes. On 4.8.1914, South Africa declared war on Germany. On 15.9.1914, disaffected Boer leaders including Maritz, de Wet, Bezuidenhout and Beyers signed a pact with Germany. The resultant rebellion was crushed by Generals Louis Botha and Jan Smuts within six weeks but hostilities lingered until 4.2.1915. Thailand did not begin censoring mail until late-1940, and then only sporadically; within months of commencing to use these labels, Japan launched its attack on Pearl Harbor and entered Thailand the next day, leading to the suspension of most international mail services.
