By convention of 1872, the rates between the Transvaal & Cape Colony were set at their respective internal letter rates, being 6d per ½oz from Transvaal. Until the Cape Colony and the Orange Free State signed their convention of 1877, mail was routed via Griqualand West to avoid paying an additional charge for Orange Free State internal postage.
