1682 c image1943 (July 19) inwards from New Zealand to "Rev AW Silvester,c/- Sub Lieut JR Keenan, RANVR, CODSIO, Vila, New Hebrides" [Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve, Commanding Officer Deputy Supervising Intelligence Office] with 1935 Pictorials 2d Hut solo tied by 'PAPATOETOE' cds, censored with Auckland 'D.D.A./117' resealing label, 'NOUVELLES HEBRIDES/31.JUIL.43/PORT-VILA' arrival backstamp, a little minor water staining & aging marks. Rev AW Silvester was a 'coast-watcher' for the Allies on Vella Lavella behind enemy lines during the Japanese Occupation of the Solomon Islands, and was awarded the US Congressional Medal of Merit for his services (the highest civilian award, and the only one ever awarded to a New Zealander). This item was sent just after the launch of Operation Cartwheel, the Allies' offensive against the Japanese in New Guinea & the Solomons. Defence Force" at upper-left endorsed "On Actrive Service", unstamped to Australia with 'U.S. ARMY POSTAL SERVICE/A.P.O./717' cancel, self-censored with 'PASSED BY/* CENSOR * ' triple-oval handstamp in violet applied at Munda signed by the Major, US Army Postal Service 'DEC/23/1943' arrival backstamp, a little roughly opened on the back flap affecting the backstamp. Major (later Colonel) Martin Clemens was a Coastwatcher on Vella Lavella during the Japanese Occupation of the islands. 1687 c image1943 (Dec 7) envelope with "Major N Chichlow B.S.I.P." sender's endorsement on reverse, to FE Johnson Esq c/o the BSIP Government Office in Sydney, Australia with KGVI Pictorials 2d solo tied by Australian-pattern 'LUNGA/BRITISH SOLOMON IDS' cds cancel with another largely very fine strike alongside, BSI 'RED CROSS APPEAL/1d' Cinderella label showing an indigenous canoe affixed on the face (not tied), a couple of very minor blemishes. After the Allied forces drove the Japanese out of Guadalcanal in February 1943, the Protectorate Headquarters were re-established at Lunga (some 10 miles west of Honiara). On 17.7.1943 a temporary Protectorate GPO was established at Lunga Beach. (Image1) (Image2)

1690 PSE image1944 (Nov 10) formular usage of US Postal Stationery Envelope Airmail 6c Plane to England endorsed "From Rev J Edwards, Melanesian Mission, BSI" & "By courtesy of US Air Mail" at upper-left - the latter & the envelope indicia crossed out in red pencil - with KGVI Pictorials 2d Hut added tied by Tulagi cds cancel, censored with 'OPENED BY CENSOR' thick-border boxed blue/white resealing label at left, a few aging marks. The rate was 3d per 1oz foreign letter, but no postage due was collected.
