Plus the typed 'REGISTERED RECEIPT' posting form. The cover is illustrated by John Little at page 153, where he states "this is the only cover known to me of censor 4 (Vanikoro)". 1664 c image1941 (Jan 23) inwards from New Zealand to "Sister Elizabeth Common, c/- Methodist Mission, Buka Passage, Bougainville, Mandated Territory of New Guinea" with 1935 Pictorials 2d Hut solo tied by 'PAPAROA' cds, carried via Australia where censored with Sydney resealing tape at left, on arrival the item was held - the addressee having departed - and eventually forwarded to the Solomon Islands with light but discernible 'TULAGI/-7DE42' backstamp and then to the New Hebrides with '.../-8JAN43/VILA' backstamp, but then returned to New Zealand with Auckland '12FE43' transit on the face where again redirected to Onehunga, a few edge faults & aging marks. The Japanese had landed troops at Rabaul on 23.1.1942 and Sister Elizabeth Common had left Bougainville on 26.1.1942 on the ketch 'Fauro Chief' along with 12 others for Australia. (Image1) (Image2)

1665 c image1941 (Dec 5) Methodist Church of New Zealand envelope inwards to "Sister Merle Farland, Methodist Mission, Biau via Gizo, British Solomon Islands" with 1935 Pictorials 2d Hut solo tied by 'REMUERA' cds, undeliverable due to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour on 8.12.1941 with 'NOT TRANSMISSIBLE/SERVICE SUSPENDED' & 'POSTAL SERVICE SUSPENDED' handstamps in violet, censored at Sydney (where at least the first of these markings was applied) with resealing tape tied by 'PASSED/BY/CENSOR/1148' cachet, then 'REMUERA/-2AP42/NZ' cds & 'THIS ARTICLE WAS INTERCEPTED/OVERSEAS AND RETURNED TO/NEW ZEALAND' cachet applied on return all on the face, a few minor aging marks. Sister Merle Farland MBE remained behind at Biua Village, Vella Lavella when civilians were evacuated in early 1942, and aided coastwatchers Jack Keenan & Henry Josselyn during the Japanese Occupation. Ex Stan Jersey. 1668 c image1942 (April 6) "[Rev]r H Baddeley, [Bishop] of Melanesia, BSI" printed return address with 'Mitre' illustration on reverse of envelope to his wife in Adelaide, Australia with KGVI Pictorials 2d solo tied by very fine "Post Office/Tulagi/6 4 42" manuscript in blue pencil, largely very fine 'PASSED BY CENSOR' boxed handstamp in violet, minor aging marks, repaired on reverse where part back-flap missing. Ex Stan Jersey (Lot 331; sold for £501 in 2001) who recorded manuscript cancels between 16 March & 8 April 1942 and stated that this item was carried by the Government medical ship 'Hygeia' calling at Malaita on 5.5.1942 and reaching Sydney on 25.5.1942. A similarly-cancelled envelope of the same day to Fiji sold in our auction of 17.6.2009 for $1840. A rare cover during the period immediately before the Japanese Occupation. Aware of the imminent arrival of Japanese forces, the Tulagi postmaster LM Davis went into hiding at Auki on the larger island of Malaita after most of the Europeans left for Australia aboard SS 'Morinda' on 8.2.1942. The few remaining ones took the opportunity to post mail when ships called. No longer having the Tulagi cds, LM Davis used this Aiku Provisional manuscript to cancel such mail. The Japanese attacked Tulagi 2.5.1942, when the remaining settlers escaped by boat. (Image1) (Image2)

1670 c image1942 (April 8) envelope with "Reynolds, Gela" sender's endorsement on reverse from Rev RE Reynolds of the Catholic mission at Gela on Florida Island, to "Messrs McIlraiths Pty Ltd Island Dept", Sydney, Australia with KGVI Pictorials 2d solo with 'squiggly-line' pen-cancel and very fine "P.O.Tulagi/6/4/42" manuscript endorsement in black pen alongside, light 'PASSED BY CENSOR' boxed handstamp in violet, a couple of very minor aging marks. Ex Stan Jersey who recorded this Aiku Provisional manuscript between 16 March & 8 April 1942 only, this being the latest recorded date (and the only example known in black ink). See Lot 1668: in this instance, the manuscript was applied by District Officer CNF Bengough, the item also being carried by the Government medical ship 'Hygeia' calling at Malaita on 5.5.1942 and reaching Sydney on 25.5.1942. Sister Field was with the Catholic Mission at One Pusa on Malaita Island, which was bypassed by the Japanese and not occupied. 1673 c image1942 (Dec 7) envelope from "Rev AW Silvester" (sender's endorsement on reverse) with 'BY AIR MAIL' etiquette to his wife in New Zealand with KGVI Pictorials 2d Hut solo tied by Tulagi cds cancel, 'PASSED BY CENSOR' boxed single-line handstamp in violet and 'OPENED BY CENSOR' thick-border boxed blue/white resealing label (Little type ...) at right, 'NOUVELLES HEBRIDES/-8.JAN.43/VILA' transit backstamp, re-directed on arrival with'WAITOA/12FE43/NZ' & 'WAIUKU/13FE43/NZ' cds on the face, docketed "Written from Barakoma, Vella Lavella, BSIP, April 25, 42" on reverse, a couple of minor blemishes. Reverend Silvester was known as the "Coastwatcher Missionary". He and Sister Merle Farland remained behind enemy lines at Bilua - one mile from where the Barakoma Airfield was later constructed - until the Allied landings on Vella Lavella in August 1943. This item has taken almost 8 months to reach Tulagi from their isolated position in the Eastern Solomons. By June 1942, American forces had re-taken Guadalcanal and Tulagi was again in Allied hands. Ex Stan Jersey: stated to have been carried by small canoe to Segi, Southern New Georgia and on to Tulagi, by ship to the New Hebrides then by South Pacific Combat Air Transport to New Zealand. Auckland, New Zealand" with KGVI Pictorials 2d Hut solo tied by Tulagi cds cancel, 'PASSED BY CENSOR' boxed single-line handstamp in violet tying 'OPENED BY CENSOR' thick-border boxed blue/white resealing label (Little type ...) at left, 'NOUVELLES HEBRIDES/-8.JAN.43/VILA' transit backstamp, docketed "Written at Bilua, Vella Lavella, BSIP, June 22:43" [year error] on reverse, a couple of minor edge bends otherwise very fine. Reverend Silvester and Sister Merle Farland remained behind enemy lines at Bilua until the Allied landings on Vella Lavella in August 1943. Two weeks after this letter was written, on 6 July 1942, the US light cruiser 'Helena' was sunk by Japanese torpedos in Kula Gulf off Kolambangra. The cruiser sank in 25 minutes, leaving most of the crew swimming in 'the Slot', where they were swept towards Vella Lavella. Reverend Silvester and another Coastwatcher Henry Josselyn hid 185 survivors from Japanese patrols for 8 days until they could be rescued by US destroyer transports. This item has taken almost 6 months to reach Tulagi, and was then carried in the same manner and in the same mail as the previous lot. (Image1) (Image2)

At this time Sister Merle Farland was at Segi naval station assisting Coastwatchers, having made the trip from Vella Lavella by canoe through Hawthorne Sound, East Bukobuko Island, avoid Japanese-occupied Munda. When Major General AA Vandergrift USMC, the Allied Commander, became aware of her presence, he ordered her evacuation by PBY from Segi Point via Tulagi & Guadalcanal to Noumea, New Caledonia. Stated to have been sent by Bishop T Wade, who was originally held by the Japanese after they occupied Kieta (Bougainville, New Guinea) in July 1942, but released after a month. He remained on Bougainville acting as a Coastwatcher until evacuated on the US submarine SS 'Gato'. (Image1) (Image2)

1680 c image1943 (Feb 4) unstamped 'BY AIR MAIL' envelope from Reverend AW Silvester to his wife in New Zealand, unstamped with 'US/NAVY' cancel, endorsed "CENSORED BY, Sub-Lieut JR Keenan, RANVR" [Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve] at lower-left, docketed "Written Vella Lavella 4:2:43 ... Received 4:3:43" on the reverse. Both Reverend Silvester & Jack Keenan were Coastwatchers on Vella Lavella during the Japanese Occupation. In July 1943, Sub-Lieut John R Keenan led a party of Coastwatchers & Natives that was landed at Cape Torokina by the US submarine 'Guardfish' just prior to the Allied invasion of Bougainville.
