countersigned at lower-left, to Cape Town (arrival backstamp) with clear 'JAMESTOWN/ OC7/80' & transit backstamp of 'QUEENSTOWN/OC10/80', flap removed otherwise very fine. The Basuto Gun War, between 13.9.1880 & 29.4.1881, was an attempt by the Cape

BASUTOLAND: 1880 Cape of Good Hope cover headed "On active Service" with 'THREE PENCE' on 4d (faded) tied by fair CGH triangular
cancel & fine 'PHILLIPS/DE31/80/TOWN' cds alongside, to "No 4 Camp DEOVR/ Basutoland" (= Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles), 'COLESBERG/JA3/81' transit backstamp, part of the flap missing & overall light spotting/aging. The Basuto Gun War,
13.9.1880 to 29.4.1881, resulted in a negotiated settlement that allowed the Basutos to keep their weapons. This is one of only two recorded inwards covers to this campaign. (Image1) (Image2)
