stepped 'SHIP LETTER/HASTINGS' handstamp & rated "8", London arrival backstamp of 10AP10/1840. By this time, Melville was 23 years old. The writer states he had been at the Cape & "...we sail tomorrow for Ascension...doubtful whether we go to Sierra
