821 F image1880-84 Naish 2d brown with Mixed Double Perforations at Left creating Irregular Compound Perf 12x13x12x12 SG 203a, partial 'TPO/3' duplex cancel, undercatalogued at £650 (as it has been since 2006). RPSofV Certificate (1997) simply states "genuine mixed perforation". Unique. Illustrated by Geoff Kellow at page 201 where he records "A single used copy is known perf 12 all around, with an extra line of perf 13 at left, cancelled with the TPO 3 duplex". Kellow's description is incorrect: the stamp is Perf 12 at top & base and Perf 13 [12¾ exact] at the sides - cutting the design at left with blind perfs - with an additional row of Perf 12 at left to correct the Perf 13 row. Prior to the correction, this stamp was in fact also an unlisted Regular Compound Perf 12x13. Sold at our auction of 7.12.2012 for $863. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4)

This is the stamp illustrated by Geoff Kellow at page 202, where he states it to be the only recorded example. The only other example of which we are aware - Compound Perfs 12x12x12x12½ - sold at our auction of 12.5.2007 for $3105 (Cat £750, which has not changed in the 17 years since). (Image1) (Image2)

838 nh image1899 Cancellation Trials comprising ½d blue-green & 2d violet SG 356 & 359 plus six other colours of the ½d and the 2d in blue-green & in deep carmine, all in blocks of 4 with each row crossed by three parallel lines ruled in different colours of writing-ink, some with minor stains from largely unsuccessful ink-removal experiments & the 2d violet with significant stains, three marginal blocks have light notations in the margins referring to chemicals used in the removal experiments, full unmounted original gum. Unissued. The fraudulent re-use of stamps from which pen-cancels had been removed was the impetus for these Special Printings. Only twelve sheets of  60, in different colours were printed. It was only in 1990, that the remainders were discovered, & no more have appeared since. With a copy of Richard Breckon's article from 'The Australian Philatelist' (Spring 1989).  (10 blocks) (Image1) (Image2) (Image3)

The ACSC states at page 225 that only the original 1901 printings from Plates 1 & 2 were done by 'print & turn' and that "subsequent printings ... show upright watermarks only, any inverted watermarks being abnormal". Geoff Kellow states at page 295 that Die III printings "were made in late April-July 1905 from Plates 13-16 ... [and] are relatively scarce, appearing only two months before the introduction of Crown over A paper". (Image1) (Image2)
