1863-81 Laureates 4d dull rose Perf 12 SG 110 with 'VICTORIA' Omitted at Top, neat partial duplex '3' cancel of Castlemaine well
clear of the void area. Unlisted by Gibbons. RPSofL Certificate (1963). Ex JRW Purves, Rodney Perry and Gary Diffen: sold for £840; sold at our auction of 5.8.2021 for $1590. A very fine example of this extraordinary error, caused by degrading of the
'make-ready' during printing & noted by Geoff Kellow at page 162 as being "constant until a new make-ready was prepared which, in view of its rarity, must have been quite quickly". Only three examples recorded. (Image1) (Image2)

1863-81 Laureates 4d dull rose-pink Compound Perf 12½x12 SG 110cb, quite well-centred, Melbourne duplex of 'MY-26/64', unpriced by
Gibbons unused or used. RPSofV Certificate (2024). These compound perforations are derived from partly-perforated sheets completed with the Ferres machine. Geoff Kellow states at page 163 that "such stamps are naturally of some rarity". We have no
explanation for the apparent use of this machine on a stamp dated four months before its supposed implementation, other than to comment that the date may be incorrect (which would be highly unusual at the GPO). (Image1) (Image2)

indeed Perf 12, this Perf 13 example would be the first recorded. (Image1) (Image2)

Kellow states at page 25 that two single-line Perf 12½ machines were introduced from 1879 onwards, and at page 173 that this issue "occurs perf 13, 12½ and 12", but does not mention compound perforations. (Image1) (Image2)

1863-81 Laureates V/Crown Wmk 5/- blue/yellow with the Watermark Reversed SG 139a, a light shade and a large stamp, Geelong duplex
cancel, undercatalogued at £550. Stamps with the watermark reversed are very scarce: Geoff Kellow at page 180 states that no more than 25% of the printing was affected, which is not reflected in the catalogue value relative to the price of the normal
stamp (£450). (Image1)

Watermark '10' Inverted, neat duplex cancel, Cat £48+ for normal upright watermark, the variety unlisted by Gibbons. Not recorded by Geoff Kellow, who - in discussing the regularly-found watermark varieties on the 9d on 10d Laureates surcharge -
states at page 175 that "the 9d Bell design of 1873, shows no such watermark varieties" and more generally (p20) that "With a few exceptions ... inverted watermarks from the period 1860-1882 are very scarce to rare". (Image1) (Image2)

at base - sold at our auction of 29.6.2012 for $265. (Image1) (Image2)

1863-81 Laureates 8d red-brown/pink Watermark '10' as SG 192c (Perf 13) but Compound Perf 13x12½, very well-centred, neat duplex
cancel. An excellent example of the aberrant perforations produced by the late-1879 repair to one of the Perf 12¾ machines, which Geoff Kellow states at page 25 resulted in "short lengths gauging 13¼-13½ and 12¼-12½ ... resembling a compound use of
two machines, which it is not". The exact gauges here are 12.75 top & base (as usual) & 12.3-12.4 at the sides (repaired state). This machine was converted to a 12½ comb-perforator in 1880, so these aberrant perfs were quite short-lived. (Image1) (Image2)
