783 c image1912 (Nov 19) to "The Misses Bayly c/o Agent General for Tasmania" London endorsed "Please Forward" with Pictorials ½d green and Surcharges 'ONE PENNY' on 2d violet vertical pair tied by three largely very fine complete strikes of 'T.P.O. No2/TASMANIA' cds used on Main Line between Hobart and Launceston, repaired tears clear of the stamps & markings do not overly detract. Imperial Penny Postage was introduced from 1.5.1911. It is unclear whether the additional payment was because the letter weighed over ½oz or for a Late Fee for posting directly onto the train, or possibly because the sender mistakenly believed that the 2½d UPU letter rate still applied. Geoff Kellow states at page 92 that "Calvert ... used the serpentine rouletter ... to divide the sheets of 100 into upper and lower groups of 50" - stamps with the serpentine roulettes at top invariably stemming from the top row of the pane - and estimates that only around 7000 of the 160,000 stamps used for separation experiments were so treated. 797 G image1860-66 Beaded Ovals 6d pale orange SG 93, exceptional centring with the perfs clear of the design on all sides, light Barred Numeral cancel, Cat £750+, for the deeper shade. Another also superb example in this rare shade sold at our auction of 16.5.2023 for $2760. Geoff Kellow at page 137 suggests the pale shade may have been caused caused by the corrosive properties of the ink which lead to the early termination of printings in this colour.
