627 = imageIPSWICH: 1859 piece from a cover to a European destination with exceptional franking of NSW Imperf Diadems 8d dull yellow-orange SG 98 (large margins & superb!; Cat £1500) & 6d deep slate SG 89 (margins close - at right - to large) tied by light Rays '87', the 6d also tied by red 'LONDON/AU 9/59/PAID' transit cds, circular 'PD' (= Paid to Destination) handstamp at left also applied at London. An important & truly outstanding item, proving in-period use of the Imperf 8d in the Moreton Bay District & with impeccable provenance: Ex Alfred Caspary, Maurice Burrus, Lars Amundsen, Tomasini, Dr Wiggins, 'Manwood' & 'Carrington' (Mark Dankin): sold at our auction of 22.2.2013 for $2760. BPA Certificate (1964) as the then SG 126 & 120. [The "Carrington" registered outer with Imperf 8d golden-yellow sold for $12,650] Because of the existence of abnormally large perforated stamps in the same shade, imperforate examples of the 8d are very difficult to guarantee as genuine unless they bear dated cancels. However, in this instance, the large ample margins on all sides and the London cds pre-dating the issue of the perforated stamp, coupled with the long history of this famous piece, all leave no doubt as to its genuineness. 640 F image1897-1908 Four Corners 2d blue Major Cracked Electro across Face & Neck as ACSC Q16dv (SG 234a) [Pos 45] but Retouched, a couple of short perfs at U/R, cancelled well clear of the affected area. Unlisted in the ACSC. With the 'normal' Cracked Electro for comparison. Ex Ken Killeen: sold at our auction of 2.12.2021 for $1120. Far superior to the only other recorded example, ex Bernie Manning, that had faults but sold at our auction of 13.6.2009 for $1165. [The Cracked Electro presents as a Jagged White Flaw from the Brow to the Base of the Neck. The variety offered here appears to be a crude retouch involving a simple filling of the crack so that it now presents as a Colour Flaw. Geoff Kellow was apparently unaware of the retouch as he writes of the affected unit being substituted, without mentioning this "intermediate state". Ken Scudder at page 266 states "...an example is known where the crack has printed filled with ink"] (2) (Image1) (Image2)
