653 PSE image1896 (Mar 30) usage of a formular registration envelope probably by De La Rue overprinted 'CASH REMITTANCE' at upper-left and 'THE CASHIER/ GENERAL POST OFFICE/BRISBANE' address, 'MILTON' cds with fleurons as spacers & 'REGISTERED/ MILTON' handstamp, the flap sealed with wax with very fine impression of the 'POST OFFICE/[crown]/MILTON' mailbag seal, Brisbane arrival backstamp of the same day. In our opinion, this item is properly characterised as a formular Registration Envelope issued by the Post Office for internal use only, making redundant the statement at upper-right requiring postage to be affixed. It is an example of Post Office mail enjoying free postage. Unrecorded by Alan Griffiths, who did list a similar earlier unused McQurquodale type, with the comment that "No used example has been recorded...The address [suggests] that a used example may never come to light."
