With typed transcripts of the letters, in which he states "...letters of introduction here are all humbug...even [a letter of credit] might prove of little or no value...My prospects have been sadly blasted by being put down instead of being promoted...I should suffer for the inefficiencies of those above me" and "...I am very comfortably settled in my new situation as Coast Officer...My salary is £150 per annum and £50 a year instead of a house...I like it better than office work...I am situated in an isolated spot...We have no society of any kind..." and "...you announced the receipt of a letter from here dated 12 months ago...I seldom see anybody and lead a sort of barabrous life. I have occasionally some trouble with my convict Boatmen...very serious loss through building the station on private property that has been claimed by the Wentworth Family...a great want of good faith on the part of the Wentworths...it will take me two years to pay off my debts..." 610 c image1847 lengthy entire headed "Melbourne July 2nd 1847" and signed "Wm Balloch", to Stirlingshire, apparently misplaced (within the mails?) with light oval 'GUNDAGAI/26OC/1847/NEW.S.WALES' backstamp and an almost very fine rounded-boxed 'PAID AT/GUNDAGAI' handstamp unusually in black, rated "1/3" in red for the inland rate of 1/- for carriage between 230 & 300 miles + 3d shipletter, London transit of 4MR4/1848 in red & poor boxed arrival of Denny of 6.3.1848 in blue, light soiling & wear along the folds. Ex Dr Ed Druce: sold at a Melbourne auction in 2012 for $1020. An intriguing item. There is no Sydney or Melbourne transit but if sent south, the rate would have been 1d more. The writer tells his brother "...I have had only one opportunity of writing to you since the month of May 1846...I am still in the employ of Messrs William Walker & Co Sydney as Superintendent of their Cattle Stations...in different parts of the Country. I have at present come to Melbourne with Fat Bullocks for sale...I have now to go to the Murrumbidgee River..." With a typed transcript of the letter. (Image1)

A really unusual combination franking. At this time, the Fiji stamp(s) paid postage only to the first port of call. The addressee is known to have been the former missionary to Fiji, Rev Joseph Nettleton at Kadavu. Ex Dale Forster. 618 c/D imageHetherington Brothers correspondence with 1843 part-entire from NSW to Richard Hetherington at the family seat in Scotland with light 'PAID AT/MAITLAND' handstamp (sold at a Melbourne auction in 2013 for $420), 1854 & 1855 envelopes with enclosed letters from Richard at "Port Curtis" to William at "Bonshaw/ Frasers Creek" the first with very fine previously unrecorded 28mm 'GLADSTONE/N S W' backstamp & the other with Richard's postmaster's manuscript "Gladstone Febry 23rd 1855" & previously unrecorded 28mm 'BYRON/N S W' backstamp, 1855 entire also to William, 1854 1856 & 1857 covers from Scotland to William with Embossed 1/- or 6d both cut-square or Stars 1d strip of 6, condition rather mixed but an important MBD-related group that were discovered only in 2011: sold at our auction of 19.11.2011 for $2345. The brothers, who claimed descent from Scottish King Duncan I ('Macbeth's' King Duncan), arrived in NSW in 1856, William becoming a grazier & Richard trying his luck in a newly-opened part of the MBD. Port Curtis was renamed Gladstone in 1857, with Richard as the first postmaster. Bonshaw is on the south bank of the Dumaresq River that forms part of the NSW/Queensland border: a PO opened only in 1866. Byron was about 90km S of Bonshaw: the PO opened 1.1.1855 & was replaced by Inverell 15.9.1859. Frazers Creek PO 1.1.1853; renamed Ashford 1.12.1863.  (9 items) (Image1)

619 c image1844 (Mar 27) entire from England perversely addressed to "The Registrar of the Supreme Court/Melbourne Port Phillip/Van Diemans Land" [sic] (!) with 'SHIP LETTER/AU*13/1844/SYDNEY' backstamp, missent to the Moreton Bay District with clear oval 'BRISBANE/[crown]/AU*21/1844/NEW S WALES' backstamp (ERD), returned to Sydney with backstamp of AU*26/1844, faint Melbourne arrival of SE*8/1844, docketing regarding a court case. Carried per Toulmin Packet 'Ceylon' to Sydney. Obviously somebody found the whole thing entertaining and has written on the face: "Be pleased to look/at the address of/this letter". Marvellous. Sold at our auction of 13.9.2008 for $8050. This is believed to be the earliest recorded usage of any postmark in what became Queensland. Hugh Campbell had speculated that the first datestamp would be a circular device. He recorded no Brisbane markings prior to 1848. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3)

620 c image1849 small envelope to "Gara/Sydney" endorsed on the flap "favored By Mr Frederick Manger" & rated "7" in black, very fine 'SHIP LETTER/[crown]/NO*23/1849/SYDNEY' and largely fine to very fine strike of the scarce oval 'BRISBANE/[crown]/DE*2/1849/NEW.S.WALES' datestamp, very minor blemishes. Sold at our auction of 15.8.2014 for $1205. At first glance this would appear to be from Brisbane to Sydney. However, the Brisbane datestamp is 10 days later than the Sydney cds, indicating that the letter arrived at Sydney by ship, probably from one of the Pacific Islands. "Gara" was a pastoral station in New England & it appears that the letter was missent via Brisbane, rather than overland from Sydney, Newcastle or Port Macquarie to Armidale. This is the only cover we can recall having transited the Moreton Bay District. (Image1) (Image2)
