A terrific item, with a full transcript of the letter. Sold at our auction of 11.7.2008 for $747. [Auburn was a small suburban office, where demand for ½d postage dues would have been very small & old stock to be expected. 488 PSE imageWORLD WAR II: 1942 (late) Australian Red Cross 'PRISONERS OF WAR POST' red/cream envelope with 'C/o OFFICIAL PRISONERS OF WAR INFORMATION BUREAU' at the base, to AIF POW in Malaya, Japanese han of Takeuchi, endorsed "Camp 4(B)" by the Changi Bureau of Record & Enquiry, some edge faults & slightly trimmed at right. The Japanese objected to the text at the base, so all later sendings had it amended and/or obliterated. Examples with the original text are rare.
