for the first airmail to Sudan and held at Nairobi where light but very fine skeleton cds 'KENYA-SUDAN/ 1 ST /FE15/27/AIR MAIL' struck in red on the face & 'KHARTOUM/18FE27/...' arrival backstamp, signed on the reverse "StephenHSmith". Carried by
Tony Gladstone in the modified seaplane 'Pelican', which was damaged after the flight so the 2nd to 5th flights were made with a borrowed RAF plane.

'NAIROBI/REGISTERED' datestamp, manuscript "R/Nairobi/224" & 'KENYA-SUDAN/MR12/27/ AIR MAIL' skeleton cds in red on the face, the reverse with 'KISUMU/12MR/27/KENYA' arrival, large-part 'Owing temporary failure/[Air] Service Mail/[forwarde]d normal
route.' cachet in violet (Nierinck 270312a; Cat SFr600 in 1992), 'REGISTERED/19MR27/MOMBASA' transit & part Stamford arrival backstamp of 9AP/27, characteristic immersion stains. This was the 6th flight & the first per 'Pelican' since it underwent
repairs. It crashed on takeoff from Lake Victoria near Kisumu, and because there was no other plane available, the mail went by train to Mombasa & ship to England. (Image1) (Image2)

1927 (Sep 28) commercial cover from Sussex with KGV 1½d x5 (1½d + 6d airmail surcharge) tied by machine cancel, to "Malinglands/PO
Kitale/Kenya Colony" with largely very fine skeleton 'KENYA-SUDAN/OC17/27/AIR MAIL' cds in red, the reverse with cds of 'KISUMU/17OC/27/KENYA' & 'ELDORET/OC19/27/KENYA', opened a little roughly. After offloading the mail at Kisumu, 'Pelican' struck a
submerged object on Lake Victoria & sank: Nierinck #271017. This was the last flight until the Imperial Airways service commenced in -.02.1931.

29th/co District Commissioner/Halfa", superb 'SUDAN AIR MAIL/18 VI 31/KHARTOUM' cds on the face & similar '.../19 VI 31/WADI-HALFA' arrival backstamp, opened a little roughly. On 16.6.1931, flown from Cairo per 'City of Birmingham' which crashed at
Aswan & was destroyed. Mails forwarded per 'City of Jodhpur' lost only one day in transit. Nierinck #310616. One of the most unusual addresses we have seen for a long time, to a passenger aboard a Travelling Post Office. (Image1) (Image2)
