cracker! Kephalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands, off Greece's central west coast. Gambela is 75km inside Ethiopian territory.

1938 (May 11) British Royal Automobile Club envelope (240x152mm) used internally with KGVI 1½d tied by London cds, 'ANDOVER
HANTS/12MY/38' backstamp & redirected to "East Surrey Regt/.../Khartoum" with 'T'-in-hexagon handstamp & mss "45" (c), Postage Due 4m x2 & 10m tied by 'KHARTOUM/16MAY38/...' cds. An extraordinary usage. 1½d paid the domestic Printed Matter postage &
was also the base rate to ½oz for the Empire Air Mail Scheme (EAMS). The cover was diverted to this service & taxed for being overweight. The four day transit proves carriage by air. (Image1) (Image2)

1938-39 Empire Air Mail Scheme (EAMS) group on exhibit pages including 1938 (July) & 1939 (Apr) test flights, 20JY/38 from GB to
Darfur paid 3d but taxed with Postage Due 4m pair & fine 'EL-FASHER/28JUL38' backstamp (two days after EAMS became operative to Sudan), 1938 (July 28) Sierra Leone to GB at 1/4d per Air France redirected to Sudan at 1½d rate on 2AU/38 (a remarkable
cover), overweight from GB paid 1½d with Postage Due 4m & 10m pair oddly cancelled with oval 'REGISTERED/ 2 /KHARTOUM' datestamp, scarce registered to GB, covers to Australia & Canada, 1939 (Aug 30) last service from GB with Khartoum backstamp of
3SE39 the day WWII began & the service ended, & a couple of others. Very scarce.

ROOM/30OCT1939/1st BN WORCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT' cachet in violet at upper-left (opened a little roughly), or 'ATBARA' x2. The outbreak of war on 3.9.1939 saw the rate to GB raised to 6pi but it was reduced to 4½pi on 20.11.1939. [The illustration is

2774 cachet, largely very fine strike of the rare boxed 'MISSENT TO/HONGKONG' (apparently not listed by Proud; similar to Webb CCiia but both lines are the same height) & 'VICTORIA/13DE/40/HONG KONG' backstamp, minor soiling. Flown per the
'Horseshoe' Route but missorted at Calcutta per CNAC 'Over the Hump' to Kunming & Hong Kong from where it would have been returned to Rangoon for on-forwarding to New Zealand. From 30.10.1940, the route into China replaced the Bangkok-Hong Kong
