2920 c image1941 Australian Forces in the Sudan usage of Italian airmail envelope to Australia with light strike of censor 1001 cachet then with the West Yorkshire Regiment in Ethiopia, Sudan 3m & 2pi pair tied by very fine British 'FIELD POST OFFICE/21MR/41/ 74 ' cds then at Khartoum (not recorded thus by Proud), red/white Sydney censor label & cachet in violet, minor blemishes & wrinkles. An extremely rare cover. Four Sergeants (Body, Burke, Howell & Wood) & Lt Allan Hooper Brown were detached from Australian 2/1 Field Regiment to join a clandestine commando unit. They entered Ethiopia late -.12.1940, made many successful raids ahead of advancing Indian & East African forces, & were withdrawn after the Italians capitulated on 6.5.1941. The sender, Sgt John Kenneth (Ken) Burke, was a member of Mission 101, also known as Operation Gideon. This is the only cover known to us from an Australian serviceman in Ethiopia or Sudan. Neither Phil Collas nor Ted Proud make any mention of this operation. (Image1) (Image2)

Scarce quintet. Fewer than 1000 East African troops served in southern Sudan, in the Juba & Malakal areas. Proud notes that five similar cds were held at Nairobi. However, it is almost certain that at least one of them was with the troops in the Sudan.  (5) (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5)

The absence of censorship or other markings indicates that it was sent in an official despatch bag. General (later Field Marshal) Bernard Law Montgomery commanded the British Eighth Army in North Africa between August 1942 & July 1943, seeing off Irwin Rommel & the German forces. Thomas Frederick Gordon Carless was a career administrator in the Sudan. A beautiful example from this important pioneer flight, according to the Egypt Study Circle, being the first to carry mail in Africa. This is apparently the cover offered at Christie's (no illustration could be found) on 19.6.1996 that sold for £4830. Sold at the Cherrystone (NY) auction of 16.9.2020 for US$2760. Other similar covers, rarely as attractive as this, have sold for as much as £6000 or US$10,000. Marc Marie Edmond Armand Pourpe was flying as early as 1912 in India. In -.1.1914, he represented the French Ligue National Aerienne at the Heliopolis Aviation Week, during which he flew to Khartoum on 3.1.1914, returning 12.1.1914. At the outbreak of WWI, he enlisted in the French forces as an aviator. He died in a crash at the end of a reconnaisance flight on 2.12.1914. (Image1) (Image2)
