A very unusual origin/destination item. (Image1) (Image2)

c image1916 (Nov 13) social cover from Mexico to "Atbara/Egyptian Sudan" with 10c Map, small black/white 'Opened/by/Censor' label & Sudan censor cachet #31 in violet, the reverse with cds of Cairo (22.12.16), 'BASE ARMY POST OFFICE/ V /21DE16/ T ' & 'ARMY POST OFFICE/ A /22DE/16/ SZ 10' skeleton cds and very fine 'SHELLAL-HALFA/TPO/26DE15/No 1'. Excellent origin/destination item. The route appears fairly straightforward. However, the faint oval marking on the face reads 'BASE POST OFFICE/EEF PORT SAID', suggesting the cover was first missent from Cairo. (Image1) (Image2)

c image1916 Darfur Campaign stampless OAS cover endorsed "HG Thornton/Lieut" at lower-left, to his parents in Northamptonshire with superb 'RAHAD/19APR916/...' cds (the example illustrated by Ted Proud) & triangular Sudan Censor '6' cachet in violet. the reverse with TPO transit cds of 'KHARTOUM-EL-OBEID' (23.4.1916) & 'SHELLAL-HALFA/No 2' (26.4), minor faults. A rare early Royal Air Force cover. After the Re-Occupation 1896-98, the Darfur (= Land of the Fur) area was left undisturbed. In 1915, the local sultan declared allegiance to the Ottoman Empire. Kitchener's successor as Sirdar, General Reginald Wingate, despatched a force of 2000 men & three (or four?) aircraft to gain control of Darfur. It took them eight months to quell the Fur. HG Thornton of C Flight 17th Squadron, was one of the RAF pilots. (Image1) (Image2)

c image1916-18 Arab Revolt in the Hejaz stampless OAS officer's cover signed at lower-left "H Goldie", to Cairo with 'PORT SUDAN/26AU18/...' cds & light diamond-of-dots (retta), the reverse with superb 'SHELLAL-HALFA/ TPO/1-IX-18/ No 1 /SUDAN' & light Cairo arrival of 3SE18, minor imperfections. From July 1916, assistance was given to the Arab uprising against the Ottomans in the Hejaz, which subsequently morphed into Saudi Arabia. Major HJ Goldie described his HQ at Jeddah as so hot that nothing could survive except the hardiest of humans. The only WWI Sudan-related cover we have seen from Arabia. (Image1) (Image2)

c image1917 (Apr 29) officer's letter to "The Army of Salonika" & signed at lower-left by the sender with Arab Postman 5m tied by 'KHARTOUM' cds & partial Sudan censor handstamp in violet, the reverse with cds of Cairo (5.5.1917), 'BRITISH ARMY POST OFFICE/6MY/17/ Z ' & skeleton 'BAPO/12MY17/RLO' (= Returned Letter Office) where endorsed on the face "2/20 Soudan", minor blemishes. Another excellent destination but the backstamps were all used at Cairo so it seems there was no mail service to Salonika. The addressee was Lt-Col William St Andrew Warde-Aldam of the Coldstream Guards. 2904 PSE image1917-18 Turkana Patrol usage of 5m Envelope signed "AW Batchelor/Major" (?) at lower-left to Egypt with very fine 'MONGALLA/6.XII.917/...' cds & 'CONTINENTAL/CAIRO/28.XII.17/...' (hotel) arrival backstamp, opened a little roughly with repaired fault at upper-centre. A rare cover from this little-known WWI incident. In 1917, disturbances near the southern border saw a force of Sudanese & Kenyan troops despatched to bring the "unruly" Ngturkana people under control, a task that was accomplished only in 1929. Even today, the area is disputed between South Sudan & Kenya. (Image1) (Image2)

PSE/D image1918 (Mar 17) usage of Camel Postman 5m Envelope endorsed at upper-left "From Dr AN/Jumblatt/Dongola Civil Hospital/Sudan", to Philadelphia with 2m 3m 4m & 5m detached & replaced haphazardly (& another 1m ? stamp apparently lost) but all with 'DONGOLA/17 III 18/...' cds & blue/white R label, the reverse with oval 'REGISTERED/23MR18/SHELLAL-HALFA TPO', boxed 'DAMAGED BY IMMERSION/IN SEA WATER' handstamp of London on both sides & tying two of the displaced stamps, double-oval 'PHILADELPHIA/ APR/10/1918/REGISTERED' arrival backstamp in purple. Carried from Alexandria per SS 'Kingstonian' which, on 11.4.1918, was torpedoed off Sardinia by German submarine UB68. The mail suffered extensive water-damage & was taken to London where the recovery process took several weeks. Most 'Kingstonian' covers are addressed to the UK. This is very unusual for being from the Sudan & going to America. With the original letter headed "Dongola Civil Hospital/10th March 1918" & signed "N Jumblatt", an Arab physician, writing to a former missionary, to whom he extends thanks for assistance given to his children with their schooling in the USA.  (2 items) (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4)
