1897 officer's cover to England with a very late usage of unoverprinted Egyptian 5m pair cancelled with diamond-of-dots (retta) &
part backstamp of Suez (?) of 16 V 97, a couple of faults & some soiling. The cover was probably posted late onto the departing steamer so was cancelled in transit. With the original three-page letter headed "Suakim/11th May 97" & signed "T Gore
Anley" in which he states "...the climate is not conducive to energy...The bell I took off a dead camel shot near Dongola...I have got a beautiful camel saddle some spears a shield &c...I hate the Greeks they try and get themselves hit and then make
complaints...", and then he complains of being given inadequate notice for an upcoming Horse Guards examination. The writer was Capt (later Brigadier) Frederick Gore Anley, later Governor of Dongola Province.

1897 officer's letter with 'XII SOUDANESE' printed on the flap, to England with Overprints 1pi tied by one of two fine strikes of
the rare 'MERAWI/[star & crescent]/----96' (date error) worn cds, The reverse with transits of Halfa (9.11.1897) & Cairo (16,11,97) and 'PADDINGTON W/NO24/97' arrival, flap faults. Merowe PO 1897. The cds is of the 1870s-pattern, indicating that
there was an earlier office of this name. The obvious wear to the device, and the year '96' apparently being rusted in place, support this suggestion. On most strikes the day &/or month slugs are missing. (Image1) (Image2)
