2629 c imageSUAKIN FIELD FORCE: 1885 (May 20) fragile cover endorsed "From Cpl P Spicer 10th Coy Royal Engineers Suakin Egypt" and at lower-left "Officer Commanding/10th Coy Royal Engineers" but not countersigned, to Northumberland with GB 1d lilac tied by slightly untidy 'BRITISH-ARMY-POST-OFFICE/ A /EGYPT' cds, poor Newcastle arrival backstamp of JU3/85, opening faults at the top & defective on the reverse still presentable. The Engineers were to survey & construct a railway line to Berber, about 400km WSW of Suakin. After laying-down only 26km of track, the project was abandoned & the line dismantled. This must be one of the latest British Forces covers from Suakin: the troops were withdrawn by the end of May 1885. (Image1) (Image2)

2631 PSE imageSUAKIN FIELD FORCE: 1885 (June 9) officer's letter to "Govt Telegraph Office/Karachi Sind/India" being an Indian 1a Envelope with largely very fine strike of the 'FIELD.P.O./JUN9 - B' duplex (no year) plus 2a orange tied to the reverse by largely superb 'B'-in-bars, faint Sea Post Office cds & very fine Karachi arrival cds of 6JUL85 on both sides. The duplex is believed to have been used at Suakin's Quarantine Island 6.6.1885 to 25.9.1885 only. However, if the ERD is based on this cover, this is incorrect: the stamp is also tied by manuscript "19 6 85". This, & the usual transit time of about ten days, suggests the duplex date should be '19' not '9'. The Indian Force departed Bombay 24.2.1885; arrived Suakin 7.3.1885; withdrawn -.11.1885, leaving behind only a small garrison. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3)

"bridge" cds, backstamps of Suez Alexandria & 'MALTA/JU13/87', opened a bit roughly at the top. A terrific origin/destination item. In the distinctive hand of Brevet Lt-Colonel (later Field Marshall Lord) Herbert Kitchener, who was appointed Governor of Eastern Sudan & the Red Sea Littoral (effectively just Suakin) in -.9.1886. Suakin & Wadi Halfa were the only Sudan settlements not abandoned by the British. (Image1) (Image2)
