2669 c image1898 (Apr 17) soldier's cover correctly endorsed at the top with "Nile Expeditionary Force/Sudan" at lower-left, Arab Postman 5m x2 (paying double the concessional rate) & poor 'HALFA' cds & a better strike at lower-left, the reverse with a superior strike of the rare 'Wet through collision on the Nile' handstamp, to Gibraltar with two Malta cds of MY18/98 then missent to London with arrival of MY23/98, endorsed "Gibraltar" in rosine ink & with light 'GIBRALTAR/MY26/98' arrival backstamp, water-stained, the panels separated & rejoined. Ex Norton Collier Part I: sold for £862 (2005). Surely the most outstanding example of the 16 recorded from this famous riverine wreck, of which no details appear to have been recorded. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3)

2670 c image1898 cover with Cameron Highlanders crest on the flap, to "Portland/England" with very fine 'HALFA/26 IV 98 TI/...' cds & boxed 'T' handstamp, Alexandria backstamp, superb '1d/F.B.' handstamp & 'FORTUNESWELL/ MY12/98/PORTLAND' arrival on the face (affected by repaired opening tear), flap faults. The sender was 2nd Lt James Walter Sandilands so the assessed postage due should have been 2½d. "Portland" is the Isle of Portland, off the Dorset Coast in the English Channel, & the source of 'Portland stone'. (Image1) (Image2)

2676 c image1898 cover endorsed "Nile Expedy Force/Damali" to an NCO at "Camb Hospital/Aldershot" with Arab Postman 3m x2 (1m convenience overpayment) tied by two of three strikes of 'WADI HALFA/SPS/5 IX 98/...' cds, largely superb 'ALEXANDRIE/ A /9 IX 98/...' transit backstamp, minor blemishes. Proud states that Darmali PO was opened -3.1898 & closed -.11.1898. However, his LRD for the office cds is 9 VIII 98, and this cover from a month later bears no strike of the datestamp, so it may have closed sooner. The Cambridge Military Hospital opened in Hampshire 18.7.1879 & closed in 1996. The marvellous original building has now been converted into apartments. (Image1) (Image2)

2680 PSE image1899 usage of Egyptian overprinted 1pi Envelope with two very fine strikes of the rare 'KHARTOUM/[star & crescent]/14 FE 99/...' cds, to an officer in London, the reverse with 'WADI-HALFA/CAMP' (Proud D2) & Alexandria transits & London arrival  of FE27/99 backstamps, redirected to "Royal Naval Barracks/Sheerness" with poor arrival backstamp, very minor blemishes. The Mahdi was defeated in -.9.1898 & a temporary PO opened at Khartoum. It was replaced early-1902 by a new GPO. Of the cds, John Gibson states "only four examples recorded on cover". The addressee was Captain (later Admiral) Colin Richard Keppel. In 1885, he was with the party that discovered Khartoum had fallen. In 1897 he was at the forefront of the successful operations to re-take Khartoum, and defused the tensions of the Fashoda Incident. He was later equerry to four different British kings. 2684 #og/nh image1m brown (with Current Number '1') to 3m orange SG 1-3 half-sheets of 60 (10x6) each comprising ten vertical strips of the six distinctive types, the 1m with interleaving adhering to most units and some wrinkling & toning at the base, the 2m & 3m are mostly very fine with large-part original gum and most units unmounted, Cat £420+, for mounted singles. Important specialist pieces, from the authorised printings, not the later & lighter unauthorised emissions: see Lot 2690.
