1283 PSE imageMA TAU CHUNG INDIAN CAMP (CAMP I): 1942 (May 28) Japanese simple postal card with message headed "Indian War Prisoniers [sic]/Camp-I" from a Sikh soldier to his brother in India, two obliterations by the censor & han of Taerada, most unusually with American censor in violet proving carriage per the 'Asama Maru' & 'Gripsholm', British censor in black, poor 'BILGRAM' arrival cds, light creases. From the first exchange of internees and mail. Ex William Kwan (2008) and David Tett - his front cover item - sold for HK$50,400 (the highest price in the sale) and illustrated in Volume Four at page 89, where he states this is the only item recorded from an Indian POW in Hong Kong. 1285 PSE imageNORTH POINT (CAMP H): 1942 (Aug 5) simple Japanese POW postal card endorsed at upper-left ".../Camp H/..." with han of Hasegawa in rosine, on arrival in Canada War Effort 7c (damaged) affixed & tied by Ottawa machine, superb 'EXAMINED BY D.B/("454")', 'TRANSCONA/SP11/43/MAN' arrival cds, several creases & the airmail label now lost. A rare item from this small camp, that was closed after only four months. Carried per exchange ship 'Asama Maru', departed Hong Kong 30.6.1942 and 'Gripsholm'. Ex David Tett: sold for HK$8400. 1287 c imageSHAMSHUIPO CAMP (CAMP S): Undated simple Japanese POW postal card with han of Hasegawa, to Gloucestershire with message headed "Hong Kong...Camp S" stating "...please don't worry...", central fold; and 1943 (Feb 11) cover from England with Gloucester machine to "Hong Kong China" with notations on the face obliterated by the censor & largely fine strike of the boxed 'IT IS REGRETTED THAT/THIS ITEM COULD NOT BE/DELIVERED BECAUSE THE/ADDRESSEE IS REPORTED/MISSING PRESUMED DECEASED' cachet in violet & enhanced in red. 1816 British & Canadian POWs were on board the 'Lisbon Maru', bound for Japan, when it was torpedoed & sunk by the Amercian submarine 'Grouper' on 2.10.1942. 1288 c imageSHAMSHUIPO CAMP (CAMP S): 1942 (Apr 27) cover with 'POSTAGE FREE/PRISONER OF WAR MAIL/co Japanese Red Cross/TOKYO' cachet in violet & very fine 'HAMILTON/CANADA' cds to a private with the Royal Rifles of Canada "taken prisoner of war at Hong Kong", Canadian censor label, Japanese cachet (= Censored Hong Kong POW Camp) in blue with han of Nimori in red, manuscript "6444 S" being the addressee's POW number & camp (Shamshuipo). Carried from New York per first prisoner-exchange voyage of the Swedish ship 'Gripsholm', which rendezvoused with the 'Asama Maru' on 22.7.1942 at Lourenco Marques, Mozambique. Each ship was carrying approximately 1500 civilians who were being repatriated, plus mail. 'Asama Maru' reached Yokohama 17.8.1942, and mail was received in Hong Kong on 23.10.1942. Our vendor states that only ten covers to Hong Kong from the first exchange of mails have been recorded. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3)

Some Brits were not interned because they were considered "essential" personnel. The sender, RC ('Dick') Olive, was with the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank. He implies that he expects to be interned soon. Ex David Tett: sold for HK$7800. Illustrated at Volume 4 at page 143, where Tett states that all such covers he has recorded (apparently seven of them) are franked with the same value.
