 1940 (May 7) 'Bulk Postage Docket' with Lyrebird 1/- + Kangaroo CofA Wmk £2 + Robes Thick Paper 10/- & £1 affixed, light manuscript
cancels & all but the 1/- with 'lips'-shaped punctures, 'RENMARK/S.A.' cds twice at right. A rare survivor. The notations indicate that 852 "Accounts" at 1d each were posted, requiring payment of £3/11/-. The articles would have received a 'PAID AT
MANNUM' cds. These dockets were supposed to be sent to the GPO for accounting purposes, and then destroyed. Very few have survived. Note, that stamps below 2/- were not required to be holed. (Image1) (Image2)

 1940 (Sep 10) 'Bulk Postage Docket' with Koala 4d, Lyrebird 1/- strip of 3 + Robes Thick Paper 5/- & £1 vertical strip of 5 (a rare
multiple in any context) affixed, all cancelled "CH Heidrich" & all but the Zoologicals with 'lips'-shaped punctures, superb 'MANNUM/S.A.' cds twice at right. A rare survivor. The notations indicate that 1300 articles of "Printed Matter" at 1d each
were posted, requiring payment of £5/8/4d. The articles would have received a 'PAID AT MANNUM' cds. These dockets were supposed to be sent to the GPO for accounting purposes, and then destroyed. Very few have survived. Stamps below 2/- were not

 1940 (June 6) airmail to Yugoslavia with 5d Ram + 1/6d Hermes tied by Sydney cds, 9-dot Newcastle Censor label used at Sydney,
Egyptian censor label & magnificent bilingual '.../Postal/Censor' Handstamp in violet, minor blemishes. The 'all up' air rate via Greece was 1/11d. Italy entered the war on 10.6.1940 & air services between Egypt-Greece-England were suspended. The
cover was held at Sydney until 12JE40 (backstamp), missing 'Coriolanus' ex Sydney 8.6; held at Singapore for 6 days to take up mail from 'Coorong' ex Sydney 11.6. It was thus carried on the first 'Horseshoe Route' service per 'Carpentaria' ex Sydney
19.6, arrived Cairo 27.6. No evidence of delivery or return but we expect there was a continuing service across the eastern Mediterranean, at least by sea. [The addressee was at Slano, a coastal village 27km NW of Dubrovnik] (Image1) (Image2)

 1940 (Sep 27) family correspondence airmail to "YPCP - Russian/Poland" with AIF 1d green, 3d blue & 6d purple-brown tied by
'RUSSELL STREET/VIC' cds, complete Melbourne censor label across the flap & boxed cachet in violet on the face, the reverse with Russian 'CCCP/2.1.41/CTAHNC...' arrival, boxed 'RETOUR INCONNU' handstamp, Sydney cds of 6MR41 & DLO cds of the next day
in rosine, superb 'Received open in/DLO Melbourne' cachet in violet & DLO cds of 10MR41 in red, some soiling & minor stains. The surface rate was 3d for the first oz + 2d for each successive oz x2 + 3d registration = 10d. Until June 1941, Russia was
neutral towards Germany. Mail from Australia probably entered Russia by train from Iran. A poignant wartime cover: The address is Stanislawow (today Ivano-Frankivsk, in western Ukraine). Between 1939 & June 1941, Russia occupied the town & exiled
most of the population - presumably including the addressee - to Siberia, where the majority died. (Image1) (Image2)

 1940 (Oct 11) Clipper inter-bank airmail cover to New York with 4d Koala, 1/6d Hermes & a superb 10/- Robes tied by Sydney cds, two
strikes of the 'SUPPOSED TO CONTAIN MATTER/SUBJECT TO THE PROVISIONS OF/EXECUTIVE ORDER 8389 AS AMENDED' handstamp and 'RELEASED BY CENSOR' cachet, light staining below the stamps. The rate was 4/- for the first ½oz + 3/11d for each successive ½oz x2
= 11/10d. The 3-line cachet regards a prohibition against civilians sending banknotes into the United States; once its legality was confirmed, the item was released. (Image1) (Image2)

 1940 (Nov 7) registered airmail cover to Shropshire per 'Clipper' via America with the exceptional franking of 5d Ram plus
Kangaroos 2/- maroon pair, £1 grey - rounded corner; Cat $5000 on cover - and £2 black & rose-carmine - Cat $30,000 on cover (see footnote in the ACSC) - tied by 'REGISTERED/SYDNEY NSW' cds, minor wrinkling & a bit aged. The Two Ocean airmail rate
was 5/10d per ½oz x11 = £3/4/- + 3d registration + 2d late fee (for registered mail).
One of the most exceptional of all Commonwealth-Period covers. A 'crown jewel' for any collection of Kangaroo frankings, registered mail, Clipper/Flying Boat covers, wartime/censor mail, or sheep/wool. Ex Arthur Gray: sold in 2007 for US$15,525 (=
A$21,560 at the time). [The ACSC states "Two examples are recorded, used on airmail envelopes". The other - Ex Peter O'Rourke; corner fault and rated £2/0/10d only - sold in 2020 for $18,800] (Image1) (Image2)

 1940 (Nov 7) oversize envelope (304x240mm) airmail to California resealed with plain brown tape & a single censor label tied by
superb ' 2 /PASSED/BY/CENSOR/ 518 ' cachet in violet, with rare franking of Kangaroos £1 grey (ink smudge) + Platypus 9d + Robes Thick Paper 5/- & 10/- (light crease & weak corner) tied by Sydney cds, professionally repaired on the reverse where
roughly opened, minor wrinkling & multiple folds clear of the stamps. Impressive. Only twelve £1 Kangaroo covers are recorded. The Clipper rate was 4/- for the 1st ½oz + 3/11d for each successive ½oz x8, for an article weighing between 4½ & 5oz, with

then trans-Pacific 14.10.1941 at 5/8d to the Red Cross POW Agency; 25.3.1941 at 5/9d + 3d registration; 1941 (unclear date) at 5/10d; ARCS Message Service of 7.9.1942 at 7/5d, and of 11.1.1943 at 5/9d; a few imperfections. A curious group: all are
definitely commercial/social but they don't all conform to the recorded rates. Research opportunity.

 1941 (Jan 17) plain postcard from Hay POW Camp with 'PRISONER OF WAR SERVICE' Handstamp & superb censor cachet both in violet, to
Nebraska with Kangaroo 2/- tied by Sydney cds. The postcard rate was 2/-: examples are very scarce & most seen are from POWs. [The writer, Josef ("Jupp") Kappius, was a German socialist who fled Germany in 1935 & was one of the refugees deported from
Britain in 1940 on the infamous & shameful voyage of the 'Dunera'. He was released in 1942 to join the Allied war effort & in 1944 was parachuted into Germany as an intelligence agent] (Image1) (Image2)
