 1938 (Jan 3) hand-illustrated to "Haiju/Korea/Asia" with NSW Sesquicentenary 3d tied by 'GOULBURN/ NSW' cds, Korean characters in
red on the face, two-page letter (also illustrated) shows sender (Ace 151) & recipient (Ace 195) to both be members of a correspondence club. [In 1893, Sherwood Hall was the first Westerner born in Korea. His parents were Canadian & American
missionaries and he followed in their footsteps. In 1928, he founded a tuberculosis sanatorium at Haeju, a port city on the west coast of what is now North Korea. He also introduced Korea's first Christmas seals, in 1932]

 1938 (Nov 20) cover to Middlesex with Koala 4d x2 tied by 'ANNANDALE/=NSW=' cds, British arrival backstamp of 31DEC38 in violet.
Arrival nearly seven weeks after posting indicating that it was sent by sea, despite being correctly paid at the EAMS rate of 5d + 3d registration, minor blemishes. Per 'Coolangatta' ex Sydney 29.11.1938; arrived Southampton 11.12.1938. (Image1) (Image2)

Walker (unpublished) gives no pre-WWII rates to Liechtenstein but states the service was suspended in -.2.1941. The part-air rate to both Austria & Switzerland was 1/9d, even though Austria was via Greece & Switzerland was via Italy. (Image1) (Image2)

 1939 (circa) Empire Airmail Scheme (EAMS) usage of PPC to London with KGVI 3d blue Die II tied by Melbourne slogan (date
illegible), minor toning around the perfs. EAMS postcards are very scarce. Writing in 1988, Richard Breckon stated the postcard rate was 4½d, only ½d less than for an envelope. It was many years later that it was proven the rate was 3d. (Image1) (Image2)

 1939 (Jan) usage of KGVI 2d STO Envelope for Australian Glass Manufacturers to Pennsylvania endorsed "Air mail in America" with 9d
Platypus tied by 'AUCKLAND/NZ/26JE39/LOOSE LETTER' cds. An oddity. Both Richard Breckon and Martin Walker (unpublished) state that from 1934 the US internal air rate was 7d. However, the rate paid here is 10d + 1d late fee. 10d was the rate for air
within Australia and within America, but this item originated in Sydney so there was no domestic airmail. (Image1) (Image2)

cds, Alexandria transit of of 20.4.1939 & Beirut arrival of 24IV39, The rate was 1/8d (2d more than to Egypt) + 3d registration. Martin Walker provides no pre-1941 airmail rates to Lebanon or Syria. The four days to get from Egypt probably indicates

 1939 (Aug 7) usage of KGVI 5d Registration Envelope to Hong Kong with 1/- Lyrebird tied by 'BOGGABRI/ NSW' cds, no arrival
backstamp but with small 'R6'-in-circle postman's handstamp, minor blemishes. A very rare EAMS cover. The EAMS rate was 5d per ½oz, except for letters to Malta, for which the rate was 6d, and to Ceylon and Hong Kong, for which the rate was 7d. In

 1939 (Aug 29) Empire Airmail Scheme (EAMS) cover to a ship's passenger at Port Said with 5d Ram tied by Perth slogan cancel, pair
of Egyption bilingual black/white '.../Censorship Department' labels (small piece obscuring the stamp removed) tied to the reverse by Port Said machine of 10SEP39, redirected to London with Port Said cds & '.../ 3 /CENSORSHIP DEPT' cachet in rosine,
a bit aged. EAMS covers to anywhere other than Britain are scarce. Carried MacRobertson Airways to Darwin, then on the last pre-WWII flight per 'Centaurus' ex Darwin 2.9.1939; arrived Alexandria 9.9.1939; to GB per 'Coogee' ex Alexandria 16.9.1939. A
key EAMS cover. War was declared against Germany 3.9.1939, while this cover was in transit. This is therefore a very early Egyptian censor item. The pre-EAMS rate of 1/6d was also reinstated, but the letter was apparently treated as fully paid to

 1939 (Aug 29) Empire Airmail Scheme (EAMS) usage of a German postcard to HR Harmer in London with KGVI 3d blue Die II tied by
Melbourne slogan of 1SEP/1939, creased at left & small repaired tear at the base. An EAMS enigma. Lack of censorship suggests this was flown on the last pre-WWII flight per 'Centaurus' ex Darwin 2.9.1939. However, that would have required seamless
connections Melbourne-Adelaide-Darwin. It is more likely it was held over for the first wartime flight per 'Coogee' ex Darwin 8.9.1939. [The letter is from a Jewish emigré, Dr Adolph Kraft, who states "...the life here in Australia is now more
pleasant than in Europe...I cannot yet practise my medical profession"] (Image1) (Image2)

Kong (transit backstamp) at 4/8d rate, opened a bit roughly with repaired tear at the top; 2) 19.2.1940 via England at 2/2d x2 + 3d registration, very fine; and 3) -.-.1941 trans-Pacific at 4/-, toning on the censor labels; convenience overpayments
of 4d 5d or 1/- respectively; plus 3.4.1947 at short-lived 2/6d rate x2, central fold.

CENSOR/.......' handstamp in rosine on plain white label of Darwin & very fine strike of the scarce boxed 'PASSED BY/CENSOR/D 2' cachet in violet. Most WA mail was sent to Perth to be censored, and then returned by air to Darwin to catch flights to
Singapore & beyond. Wyndham is in the far north of the State & "only" 900km by road from Darwin, but it could have been taken there by coastal vessel. (Image1) (Image2)
