1938 (Jan) to "US Naval Hospital/Philadelphia" & endorsed "via Mariposa [ship] & New Zealand/USA Air Service" but sent by
'all-the-way' airmail via Hong Kong (backstamp of 31JA/38) with 6d Kookaburra x3 + NSW Sesquicentenary 9d violet x4 (a little discoloured) tied by Melbourne cds. The sender intended that it would be carried by ship to California and US domestic
airmail, but that facility was withdrawn on 19.4.1937, when the Aust-Hong Kong-USA air service was introduced. The 'all-up' rate was 4/8d, so this was 2d underpaid but not taxed. The rate via air to London was only 1/7d, so the via Hong Kong route
was little-used. (Image1)
