c image1877 (Nov 21) OHMS cover with inspection slits at the sides, printed "Parcel without Letter" at upper-left & endorsed "Court Jamestown", to Georgetown with remarkable franking of a re-used Perkins Bacon 6d Prussian blue overprinted 'O.S.' SG O10 (unpriced by Gibbons on cover) with fragments of the original backing-paper still evident tied by 'JAMES TOWN/NO21/77/S-A' cds (F1-1; probably underrated at R; far superior to the part-strike in the Handbook) & superb sans-serif 'REGISTERED/nNo ("2024")' handstamp at lower-left, superb framed 'LAURA' transit of NO21 (rated  RRR) & unframed 'GEORGE TOWN/NO22/77/S-A' (RRR) arrival backstamp, redirected "Try HM Gaol/Adelaide" but with no further markings, light vertical folds & pinholes at upper-left where "(B)" endorsement indicates that the envelope was later an exhibit in a court case. Martin Walker has advised that from 1866, by endorsing the envelope 'Parcel without Letter', a concessional rate of 2d for the first 4oz (plus 1d for each successive ounce) applied plus 4d registration. From 1876, this was varied to 1d per 2oz. The addressee Christian Luke Walshe had been jailed in 1867 for failing to pay maintenance for his family. The inference from the address & redirection is that he was in the lock-up at George Town. Martin Walker has discovered that he was admitted to Adelaide Gaol on the day this cover was first mailed, and also that there was a Free Bag service between the GPO & the Gaol.

c image1878 (June 27) cover to Wine & Spirit Merchants in Kent, England endorsed "Per First Steamer/Via Brindisi" with Perkins Bacon Perf 11½-12½ 6d tied by indistinct Diamond Numeral '88' with 'RHYNIE/S-A' 21mm cds alongside, large-part 'RAILWAY/ 2 /JU27/78/S-A' transit backstamp (F1-4; rated RR) and very fine strike of the rare 'INSUFFICIENTLY STAMPED/VIA BRINDISI' handstamp of Adelaide (cds would have been on the missing flap), part-Plymouth (?) transit backstamp of AU10/78 & part '[GREEN]WICH' (?) cds of two days later, minor blemishes & opened-out. The via Brindisi rate was 9d per ½oz, but the item had only paid the via Sounthampton 6d rate, and was forwarded on that route.

c image1879 (May 17) cover with embossed 'HENRY SCOTT/ADELAIDE' on the flap, to "Hannover/ Germany" with Perkins Bacon '8 PENCE' on 9d dull brown-orange SG 118 tied by GPO duplex, London transit cds of 5JY79 and manuscript "1/½" in red on the face, 'AUSG/7/7' arrival backstamp, minor blemishes. Carried via the Long Sea Route 8d per ½oz rate: compare Lot 2173 at the via Brindisi 9d per ½oz rate. The "1½d" endorsement is seen on a number of items that have passed through England on their way to European destinations in the 1879-80 period - see also Lots 2175 and 2176 - and may be in the nature of a 'transit credit' to other countries ultimately responsible for delivering the items, as mentioned in 'The Postal History of the UPU: The Postal Card' by James Peter Gough (2019) at introductory page xxxiii. [Henry Scott arrived in 1854 & helped his brother Abraham in a woolbroking business. In 1877, he was elected Mayor of Adelaide & a year later moved to the Legislative Council. Perhaps the brothers' greatest legacy is that one of their descendants is prominent collector Pat Grimwood-Taylor (née Scott)]

c image1880 (July 14) cover from Switzerland endorsed "via Brindisi" with Seated Helvetias 25c green & 50c lilac tied by 'CHUR/BR + EX' cds, the reverse with Italian 'NATANTE COLICO COMO/ 15/LUG/80/(N.2)' (= by boat Colico-Como) TPO cds & 'MODANE-BOLOGNE/AMBUL' rail TPO cds of the same day, indistinct Brindisi transit of 25/7-80 & Adelaide GPO arrival cds of AU22/80 on the face, minor stain at upper-right. Modern maps suggest that the letter came south across the Alps by road, then south down almost the full length of Lake Como to Como, then by train to Bolgna & beyond to Brindisi. This may be the only known European lacustrine (across a lake) cover to an Australian Colony.

long cover image1880 (Nov 4) long-format OHMS envelope with 'Post Office and Telegraph Department/...' imprint at lower-left & embossed Arms on the flap (which is inverted relative to the printing on the face), to Uruguay with remarkable & rare franking of Thick 'O.S.' Overprints on Perkins Bacon Perf 11½-12½ 4d strip of 3 (in a dramatic purple shade not issued in the unoverprinted stamps) & 1/- brown pair plus De La Rue Perf 10 2d (corner fault) tied by multiple GPO duplexes, London transit of DE8/80 in red & large-part Uruguayan 'DOMICILIO/13/ENERO/81' arrival backstamp, rated "3" in red, remarkably fine with no filing folds. A wonderful combination of Official stamps & mail and unusual rate & destination. Ex John Griffiths - sold in 1992 for £550 - and Martin Walker (private transaction with Don Pearce). The rate via the Long Sea Route was 1/5d per ½oz. However, Martin Walker has advised that early rate tables allowed for transit via Marseilles for 2d per ½oz more. Despite no endorsement to that effect, it does appear that the rate paid was 1/7d x2 = 3/2d, via the then Europe land-route. Colin Tabeart shows that it was carried per Orient Line 'Orient' ex Adelaide 6.11.1880; arrived Naples 5.12.1880; then per train arrived London 8.12.1880.
