2143 long cover image1872 (June 3) long cover to "Marysville (Marshall County) State of Kansas, US America" endorsed "via San Francisco" but crossed-out, with Perkins Bacon Perf 11½-12½x10 4d dull violet SG 103 & Perf 11½-12½ 1/- red-brown SG 83 tied by GPO cds, curved 'REGISTERED/No ("507")' handstamp, London transit of 15AU72 in red on the face but with no American markings, rated "4" and "4/4/8" in red pencil on face, a small piece of the flap missing. The item was apparently underpaid for double the 8d per ½oz rate via England (reduced from 1/- on -.3.1870) plus 4d registration fee, although Ben Palmer mentions a 10d registration fee for mail via Southampton to the USA from Victoria at this time. [Mail from Australia to the mid-West states is very scarce. Kansas achieved statehood on 29.1.1861]

2144 c image1872 (Dec 6) cover to London endorsed "via Brindisi" with Perkins Bacon Perf 11½-12½ 1/- red-brown x2 from different sheets (one on toned paper) with GPO cds, very fine curved 'REGISTERED/No ("1101")' handstamp, oval 'REGISTERED/ 19JA73/LONDON' arrival date- stamp in red on the face, flap removed, minor blemishes & soiling. The rate was 9d per ½oz x2 plus 4d registration fee (the sender apparently inadvertently paid double the pre-1871 10d per ½oz rate).

2145 c image1873 (Jan 28) cover from New South Wales to Scotland with rare combination franking of NSW De La Rue 2d tied by indistinct Rays cancel of Wentworth (identifiable backstamp) and South Australia Perkins Bacon Perf 11½-12½ 6d Prussian blue (trimmed perfs at the base) tied by indistinct Diamond Numeral and 'OVERLAND CORNER/S.A' backstamp (rated R), the reverse also with partial 'PO RAILWAY' & GPO cds both of JA29/73 & 'DINGWALL/MR28/73' arrival backstamp, a few edge faults & aging marks. Post offices in southern & western NSW were very remote from Sydney. Significant time was saved by sending mail directly to Melbourne or Adelaide to meet the mail boat. Wentworth on the northern banks of the Murray River is over 1000km WSW of Sydney, but only about 170km E of Overland Corner (also on the Murray River), which in turn is only 250km ENE of Adelaide. NSW/Victoria 'Riverina Covers' are relatively plentiful with 58 recorded: see 'Sydney Views' (Aug 2004 & May 2005). However, only one other NSW/South Australia combination cover has been recorded.

[The cds is not illustrated in the Handbook, but described as "Letters as F1-1 but closer to frame", which conforms to at least the lower inscription. This would be the LRD]

[Hopefully the enclosed item still exists somewhere, just waiting to be found. For Victoria, Ben Palmer lists 1/5d rates to the West Indies via Marseilles from 28.2.1859 & via Southampton from -.3.1871. Don Pearce confirmed with the late Peter Jaffé that no pre-UPU mail from South Australia to St Vincent had been recorded]

2150 c image1874 (Jan 18) cover to "Hokitika/Newzeland" [sic] with scarce franking of Perkins Bacon Perf 11½x10 1d dull green strip of 3 tied by indistinct Diamond Numeral '214' (rated RRR), largely very fine strike of the rare 'FOWLERS BAY/S-A' cds (underrated at RRR) below & superb 'TOO LATE' handstamp, the reverse with 'PORT LINCOLN/JA19', GPO of JA20 & faint Hokitika (?) arrival cds of FE21/74, repaired flap-tears & minor blemishes. [Fowlers Bay is 660km NW of Adelaide, and closer to the WA border (so remote that when the post office de-'s'ed numerous office names in the 1940s, they missed it). As a rule of thumb, 19th century datestamps are at least two degrees of rarity higher than their associated numerals. The cds is recorded OC--/73 to JA18/74 only (this strike, which is far superior to that illustrated in the Handbook) so we expect that it should be RRRRR. The only recorded '214' cover & the only numeral/cds "tie" on cover]

Paid 3d only but not taxed: if there was a concessional rate, it is not indicated. [Colne was a coalmining town]

[The very distinctive unframed 21mm cds has arcs of 5 & 4mm and a stop between 'S.A'. The Handbook records usage on JA17/91 only, making this the ERD by 17 years. We have also recorded a strike of SE14/92]

2154 c image1876 (Jan 13) cover to Port Adelaide with De La Rue Perf 10 2d orange tied by part-GPO cds & Port Adelaide backstamp of the same day, forwarded to "Grand Hotel/Moonta" with superb 'PT ADELAIDE/JA14/75/S.A' cds & large '4' tax marking, GPO transit of the same date & very fine framed 'MOONTA/JA15/S-A' arrival backstamp (F1-1; rated RRR), repaired flap fault. Because the letter was redirected within 48 hours of delivery, there should have been no additional postage payable. However, Martin Walker has advised that if it was re-addressed and deposited directly into a letter box (which would explain the "Reposted" endorsement), it would have been treated as an unpaid letter and charged accordingly. [Moonta is 165km W of Adelaide on the W coast of the Yorke Peninsula. Major copper deposits were discovered there in 1861 & mined until 1923. The Globe Hotel was built in 1862, was badly damaged by fire in 1885, and still operates as the Cornwall Hotel]

From -.2.1874, the trans-Pacific rate was reduced from 8d to 6d per ½oz. [West Virginia was created during the Civil War, when Union supporters in the west of Confederate Virginia broke-away in 1863 to form a new State. In all periods, it is one of the most elusive of all American destinations]

[The stamps have not been lifted, but they must be Large Star Wmk: the 3d on 4d Broad Star Wmk was not issued until 1879, and the 6d shade is not in the Broad Star listing. Multiples of the 3d on 4d are very scarce, especially on cover. The addressees, Stafford Smith & Co, were early stamp dealers. The principal, Henry Stafford Smith, was less successful than his brother Alfred Smith, who struck out on his own and established himself in London]
