2129 c image1870 (Dec 7) cover to London endorsed "via Brindisi" with Three Issue Franking of Perkins Bacon Rouletted 1d deep yellow-green SG 24 (Cat £100 x4+ on cover) & Perf 11½-12½ 'TEN PENCE' on 9d yellow SG 78 (affected by light vertical fold) and De La Rue Perf 10xRouletted 2d pale orange-red SG 157 tied by light 'KOORINGA/SA' cds, the reverse with 'PORT ADELAIDE' cds & most unusually with 'MARINE PO/AUSTRALIA' cds both of the same date, London arrival cds of 23JA71 in red, twice endorsed on reverse "Not Known at 165 Camberwell Road ..." or "... at 165 Camberwell New Road", 'RETURNED LR BRANCH/JA26/71/LONDON' b/s & 'DEAD LETTER/71/MY12/ADELAIDE' cds on the face, opened-out for display. A marvellous & important cover. From -.1.1870, at least from Victoria, and perhaps a little later from South Australia, a 1/1d rate to England via Brindisi was in effect, but was rarely used because the via Marseilles rate was only 10d. The Franco-Prussian War broke out on 16.7.1870, and ended in a Prussian victory with the fall of Paris on 28.1.1871 after a four-month siege. During the war, the P&O route via Marseilles was abruptly terminated, with all Australian mails arriving at Alexandria after 23.10.1870 being diverted to the more expensive via Brindisi service. Because there was not yet a telegraphic connection all the way to Australia, news of the rate increase was delayed, until 29.12.1870 when it was announced in the Government Gazette. The sender of this item may have been forewarned, or he may have anticipated closure of the Marseilles route, or chosen via Brindisi as being more secure.  In any event, this is the only recorded 1/1d rate cover via Brindisi before notice was received of closure of the via Marseilles route. The via Marseilles route was not reinstated. By late-1870 P&O mailboats had replaced Italian packets on the Alexandria to Brindisi route, and Great Britain had reduced the via Brindisi rate to 9d per ½oz. The GPO Adelaide announced this rate reduction on 26.1.1871. Colin Tabeart's tables show that there was only one P&O sailing by which Australians could have sent a letter at the gazetted wartime rate: see Lot 2131.  This new assessment of the situation raises the significance, and rarity, of both covers. This is the finest of them.

The GPO Adelaide announced this rate reduction only on 26.1.1871. This is the only recorded cover from South Australia at the gazetted Franco-Prussian War 1/1d rate via Brindisi, carried on the only P&O sailing between 29.12.1870 and 26.1.1871, per 'Geelong' ex Melbourne 3.1.1871, arriving at Galle 23.1.1871; 'Mongolia' arriving Suez 9.3.1871; and 'Bangalore' ex Alexandria 12.2.1871, arriving Brindisi 15.2.1871; onwards by rail. See also Lot 2129.
