3501 og/nh image1930 Aeroplane Overprints Harrison Printing 1/- sepia & deep olive as SG 117 but with the Overprint in Deep Carmine and the telltale 'AI,R MAIL' Variety being the first unit in a block of 4, minor characteristic gum tropicalisation, very lightly mounted & the lower units are unmounted. Ex Rev Roger Lee. Both the overprint colour and variety are unlisted in Gibbons. Alec Rosenblum states at page 43 "At first, a deep carmine was selected, but after only about 10 sheets of the 1/- had been printed therewith, the colour was found to be too dark, and for all subsequent printings the colour was a lighter carmine-red". They were issued: both used examples and covers are known.

3506 c image1900 (Sept 10) commercial cover to Ireland with Queensland Four Figures 1d orange x3 tied by two very fine strikes of the rare 10-Bar 'B.N.G' cancel (Lee #49; rated F) with a light but obvious strike of the rare 'TAMATA/SP 10/99/BNG' unframed cds (Lee #48; rated F; year error) alongside on face and another very fine strike on the reverse all in violet, a further two stamps added in transit tied by largely very fine 9-Bar BNG cancel of Samarai (Lee #25) with light but clear 'SAMARAI/14SEP[ ]0/B.N.G.' b/s (Lee #24), also Cooktown & Brisbane transits and 'ARMAGH/NO?1/00' arrival backstamp, a few mostly minor blemishes. Ex Roger Lee: sold at our auction of 9.11.2002 for $23,520 more than 20 years ago. BPA Certificate (1971). Tamata PO -.12.1899; closed mid-1905. [Gold Mining] Queensland stamps were in use in Papua from 1885 onwards. In this period, Post Offices were opened at Granville (1885; renamed Port Moresby 1890), Samarai (1888), Daru (1894), Kulumadau on Woodlark Island (1899), Nivani (1899), Sudest (1899) and Tamata (1899). Queensland stamps were replaced by those of British New Guinea in 1901. This is the only cover known with the Tamata 'B.N.G.' canceller used in the Queensland stamps period. Illustrated and described by Roger Lee at p15 & p25 as "one of the most interesting of all Papuan covers ... which must have weighed over ½oz was therefore underpaid 2d and at Samarai the two 1d stamps on the left were added ...".

3514 c image1934 (Feb 24) from passenger on board "SS Lurline/Matson Line" (return address) to Wisconsin endorsed "Via Air Mail" with rare commercial combination franking of Pictorials 3d Dandy and USA Winged Globe 8c olive both tied by 'PORT MORESBY' cds, the USA stamp also cancelled in transit by 'SAN FRANCISCO/APR 6/CALIF/1934' duplex, light vertical fold clear of the adhesives otherwise very fine. Roger Lee states that this is the only known non-philatelic example of such a combination franking from Papua. [American dealer GH Pflum created a handful of philatelic covers from both Papua and New Guinea]  In 1924 a system for pre-paying US domestic airmail with either or both Australian or American stamps was introduced in Australia and its Territories at the rates of 4½d (8c), 9d (16c) and 1/1d (24c) per 1oz depending on distance from San Francisco. The facility was withdrawn in 1937.

Rev SRM Gill headed up the Duvira Mission at the mouth of the Mamba River at Manau, almost 500kms north-west of Samarai, and the item was presumably delivered via ship. The novelty is captured by Rev Gill's pencil annotation on the reverse "The Radiogram as it arrived here resplendent in official glory" (!). (2 items)
