backstamps, minor edge faults & small part back flap missing. The rate was 1½d domestic letter plus 3d registration fee. See Lot 3450 for the only recorded use of the handstamp to cancel stamps.

1930 (May 23) commercial cover to "The Auckland Weekly News Office" with blue & black/white 'R' label inscribed 'NORFOLK ISLAND/NSW'
and Australia KGV 1½d red x3 tied by two untidy strikes of 'NORFOLK ISLAND/AUSTRALIA' cds (largely very fine backstamp), Sydney '28 MY 30' transit, minor transmission marks. The Auckland steamer service had ceased in March 1930, hence this item had
to be carried via Sydney. Scarce earliest known usage of this bi-coloured Australian R label, which David Murray Brown states (p82) was used "from 1931" (this item apparently acquired after publication of his book).

marks. The rate was 2d British Empire letter plus 3d registration fee. This item clearly shows that the handstamp was applied to sheets of R labels before these were affixed to mail.

H2), minor blemishes including a small spike hole clear of the stamp & markings. John Little states that both the labels & handstamps are "all scarce". In fact, the labels are much scarcer than the handstamps: John's covers with #L-2 & L-3 labels
sold at our auction of 5.3.2011 for $1093 & $1150 respectively.
