D imageMAPS & CHARTS: 1792 'Plan of Norfolk Island' map & navigation chart (225x245mm) published by John Stockdale based on William Bradley's detailed plan including corals & rocks along the coastline, Sydney Bay with flags 'hoisted only when landing is safe', Mount Pitt, Anson Bay, Cascade Bay and other named locations, a couple of minor marks in the margins. William Bradley served as Lieutenant on the HMS 'Sirius', coming to Australia as part of the First Fleet in 1788, and then to Norfolk Island in 1790 to search for food supplies. The 'Sirius' was wrecked off Norfolk Island, and while marooned there for 11 months, he and his crew undertook extensive surveys. He returned to England in 1792 whereupon he was court-martialled for the loss of 'Sirius', but honourably acquitted.

S image1854 (circa) Tasmania Courier 4d orange (cut-square; cut-into at left & oxidised) with large-part very fine strike of Tasmanian Barred Numeral '72' (rated RRR) used on Norfolk Island. The penal settlement on Norfolk Island was administered from Hobart. Norfolk Island was an 'external' Van Diemen's Land post office. No numeral allocation was made in November 1853 when all others were assigned. It was preferred to wait until the supply ship 'Lady Franklin' departed Hobart 16.12.1853. However, a mutiny forced the ship back to Hobart and the supply of stamps - and the numeral - did not arrive on Norfolk Island until 4.9.1854. Phil Collas & Richard Breckon (p13) "...The last of the convicts and the military establishment were removed from Norfolk Island in May 1855, leaving it uninhabited, except for caretakers, so the maximum practicable period ... Van Diemen's Land stamps could have been used was not greater than [eight] months".

c image1891 (March 13) cover to "Mrs MA Watson, Ashby Brigg, Lincolnshire" England with largely very fine complete strike of 'NORFOLK ISLAND' cds in violet (first type without 'NSW' at base) being the earliest recorded date of use, carried via Auckland where New Zealand Second Sidefaces 2½d blue affixed alongside tied by very fine 'A' in bars cancel and light transit backstamp, 'BRIGG/AP30/91' arrival cds on reverse, minor marks. David Murray Brown states of unfranked mail from the island with New Zealand stamps added (p14) that "six examples are known so far" (with this item illustrated at p15). Neither the Stephen Bradford nor the Ed Garrard collections contained any items from the 'no stamps' period franked with New Zealand stamps. The penal colony administered by Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) was abandoned in 1855, and the island remained largely uninhabited until 8.6.1856 when 194 Pitcairn Islanders arrived on the "Morayshire". Pitcairn had become too small, so a decision was made to resettle its entire population. On 1.11.1856 the British Administration appointed the Governor of NSW as Governor of Norfolk Island. Between 1855 & 1885 there was no post office on the island. Mail was received from and despatched by passing ships. A post office was finally opened in 1885. Although officially not a NSW post office, for practical purposes, it was administered from Sydney. No stamps were supplied: mail was postmarked to indicate that postage had been paid, and stamps were added when the mail arrived in Australia or New Zealand.

= image1894 (Aug 13) large piece (126x166mm) from 'The Fiji Times' newspaper of 16.6.1894 sent to "Mrs MA Watson, High Street Ashby Brigg, Lancashire" England with fine complete strike of 'NORFOLK ISLAND' cds (first type without 'NSW' at base), carried via Sydney where New South Wales 1d Centennial affixed alongside tied by 'OC 8/94' cds, some faults largely clear of the adhesive & postmarks. The only pre-20th Century usage of a newspaper from Norfolk Island known. David Murray Brown states of unfranked mail from the island with New South Wales stamps added (p14) that "two examples have been recorded so far", but does not list this item (even though an extract of it is illustrated by Collas & Breckon at p19).

c image1897 (Nov 3) cover to "EA Rogers Esq, 16 Spring Street Sydney" with well above-average strike of 'NORFOLK ISLAND' cds in black (first type without 'NSW' at base), on arrival New South Wales 2d blue affixed over the base of the cds but not cancelled, Sydney 'NO 22/97' backstamp, light vertical fold not affecting the stamp or markings, minor aging marks mostly on the reverse. Carried on one of the last - if not the very last - mail despatches before the re-introduction of New South Wales stamps on the island. David Murray Brown states of unfranked mail from the island with New South Wales stamps added (p14) that "two examples have been recorded so far", but does not list this item (presumably acquired after publication of the book). With this item and that in the previous Lot, there are now four examples known of unfranked mail with New South Wales stamps added. Dissatisfaction with the status of Norfolk Island resulted in control passing in 1897 to NSW - specifically to the Lands Department - although the island remained a British Colony. David Murray Brown states (p12) that "the supply for New South Wales stamps was resumed at the end of 1897 or early in 1898". The status of the island was not affected by Federation on 1.1.1901, but henceforth the island was administered by the Governor of New South Wales.

Illustrated by Collas & Breckon at p25. The rate was 2½d UPU foreign letter plus 3d registration fee (the 2d concessional British Empire letter rate was not extended to Great Britain until 1.4.1905). Stephen Bradford's earliest registered cover was a philatelic item from 1911. The rate was 2½d UPU foreign letter (the 2d per ½oz Empire letter rate was not extended to Great Britain until 1.4.1905). David Murray Brown states (p89) that this is "the earliest example known" of the use of any official puncture (no complete NSW OHMS envelopes used on Norfolk Island are recorded), and apparently the only known example of this handstamp used to cancel stamps (see Lots 3460, 3462 & 3464 for its more regular use on blank R labels).

c image1905 (Nov 13) usage of Solomon Islands Melanesian Mission 'Curios' postcard with natives in western dress, to Portsmouth, England with "Merry Christmas ..." social message and New South Wales 1d Arms tied by very worn 'NORFOLK ISLAND/[?]' Colonial-type cds (blank at base), taxed in transit with Sydney 'NSW/T/10' shield cachet and again on arrival with British '2D/IS/B' handstamp, the postage due apparently not collected, minor bumped corners & transmission marks. The British Empire 1d postcard rate was extended to Great Britain from 1.6.1905, but the maximum allowable message was 5 words (and it should have been written on the view side), so this item was treated as a letter and taxed for the 1d underpayment. Very early taxed mail from the island. Ex Stephen Bradford; sold for $560.
