1881 (March 30) to England originally franked with Western Australia 3d brown x2 to pay the ship letter rate to the UK, carried
privately to Egypt - presumably by ship's passenger - and posted on-shore where the WA franking invalidated by 3 pen strokes in black ink and Egypt Sphinx & Pyramids 1p rose added tied by 'SUEZ/30MA81/DEPART' cds, 'ALEXANDRIE/30MA81/ARRIVEE' transit
and London 'JU 8/81' arrival backstamp, repaired edge faults & some aging marks. The P&O steamer 'Poonah' arrived at Suez from Western Autralia on 30.3.1881. The two months plus transit to England suggests that the item was delayed in Egypt for some
time.

face, small closed tears at edges & in folds and a few light aging marks. A remarkable survivor. Carried via the Suez Canal & Brindisi during the time the overland route was closed due to the Egyptian cholera epidemic. The newspaper rate was 1d to
any place outside the Colony. Pope & Reynolds 'Western Australia - The Obliterators' (2005) census #34.

1894 (Sept 5) to "Bombay India, Punjab Lahore" addressed in both English & Arabic text with ½d green & 2d grey tied by two largely
fine strikes of 'GERALDTON/5/SP 5/1894/=WESTERN AUSTRALIA= - G' duplex cancels, Perth 'SP 10' and 'BOMBAY/OC.1/94' transits and 'LAHORE/4 OC./94' arrival backstamps, a little roughly opened at left with hinge repairs on back. The rate was 2½d per ½oz
UPU letter. Lahore is the capital of the Punjab province in the north-east of present-day Pakistan (on India's north-western border). Almost definitely sent by an 'Afghan' camel driver. Presumably numerous such letters were sent, however the survival
rate appears to be neglible, this being the first such item we have seen.
Commonly known as 'Ghans', the majority of cameleers originated from the north-west of India (including areas now part of Pakistan & Afghanistan) and arrived in Australia alone, leaving wives and families behind, to work on three-year contracts.
Before railways and motor vehicles, camels were the primary means of transporting goods in the north & east of Western Australia, where the conditions were too harsh for horses. The camels and their handlers supplied almost every inland mine and
station with provisions, goods and equipment, and hauled their products - mostly wool bales & gold - to market.
