1905 (Jan 19) mourning cover from England with KEVII 2½d to "Post Office/Fremantle" with Fremantle arrival b/s of FE17/05, endorsed on
the face "This letter came by the Orient/SS Orizaba, stranded at Garden Island/W Aus at 10.30am Thursday 16th Feby 1905", some discolouration/staining mostly on the reverse. A rare shipwreck item: the only cover recorded by Brian Peace and
illustrated by him at page 216. Ex John Woolfe - sold in 2006 for £977 - and Robin Gwynn. [Approaching Fremantle, visibility was affected by coastal bushfires & the 'Orizaba' ran into Coventry Reef, off Garden Island. The ship was completely wrecked
but there was no loss of life. Mail was undamaged & forwarded without a cachet or advice letter]

1905 (May 25) OHMS envelope with De La Rue 5d bistre Crown/CA Wmk Perf 14 (SG 99) punctured 'OS' (unlisted in the ACSC; light corner
crease) solo tied by 'R'-in-oval handstamp with 'REGISTERED/PERTH, W.A.' chamfered-box datestamp in blue alongside, undeliverable with 'UNCLAIMED' boxed handstamp on face and 'GREENOUGH/MY 31/05/W.A' cds on reverse alongside 'DEAD LETTER
OFFICE/9NOV1905/ G.P.O. PERTH W.A.' triple-ring oval (PMI Type ORS 3-a) and 'D.L.O./No.["3999"]' chamfered-box handstamps, minor blemishes. Plus 'Transfer of Land Act 1893' notice enclosure. The rate was 2d per ½oz intra-state (beyond town limits)
letter plus 3d registration fee. An important new discovery.
Apart from the De La Rue 6d violet & 1/- green issues on WCrownA Wmk paper, the only Western Australia punctured 'OS' issues recorded by the ACSC are on V/Crown and Crown/A Wmk Melbourne printings. No De La Rue Crown/CA Wmk Perf 14 printings with
'OS' punctures have previously been recorded. In footnote 1 under the 5d V/Crown Wmk Melbourne printing, the ACSC states that "The first archival record of the supply of OS punctures is of 60,000 stamps despatched in November 1905. This is after the
first Watermark Crown over Double-lined A printing, but the consignment probably also included [a] quantity of V over Crown stamps from rejected sheets. The printing must have been small since this is a very scarce stamp". This item conclusively
proves that there was an earlier despatch of 5d punctured OS stamps which presumably included V/Crown Wmk printings as well as some De La Rue Crown/CA printings.
