LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
3338 c image1853 (Jan 1; New Year's Day) part-entire from England to "W A. Sanford Esq, Colonial Secretary, Perth, Western Australia" endorsed "per Adelaide" Australian Royal Mail Steam Navigation Co steamer, rated "1/-" packet letter with very fine London 'PAID' Maltese Cross datestamp on the face, unusually not rated for the inwards ship letter rate on arrival, light ironed-out vertical file fold otherwise very fine. The letter from his father states in part "I am happy indeed to see that we are soon to have a communication with you via Singapore and so arranged as to start monthly from England with that via the Cape. I trust that it may be more successful than the latter has proved as yet - the 'Australian' is not arrived" [referring to the announced arrangements with P&O to replace the Australian Royal Mail Steam Navigation Co (ARMSN) contract and her long-overdue steamer]. Carried by the ARMSN 'Adelaide' leaving Plymouth on 3.1.1853 - the second departure of her only voyage!, having originally left on 18.12.1852 only to return "leaky" - arriving Albany 24.4.1853. It was an eventful trip: she was on fire for 2 days in the Bay of Biscay, and had been posted "missing" before turning up unexpectedly at Table Bay, Cape of Good Hope. This was the last of only four contract - and three later non-contract - ARMSN sailings over a period of two years.

3339 c image1853 (Feb 7) part-entire from England to "W Ayshford Sanford Esq, Colonial Secretary, Perth, Western Australia" endorsed "via Southampton / via Singapore", 'LYNTON DEVON' & 'TAUNTON' unframed cds in red, rated "1/-" packet letter with London 'PAID' transit of the next day alongside on the face, on arrival rated "4" in red pencil for the inwards ship letter rate, a small part of the letter missing where a wax seal was removed othewise very fine. The letter signed "your ever sincerely affectionate Grandmother" states in part "... Were you not impressed at your old acquaintance at Madrid becoming Empress of the French!" [Spanish noble-woman Eugénie de Montijo, who married Emperor Napoleon III on 29.1.1853]. Carried by the first P&O contract mail via Egypt (the 'overland route') to Australia on the 'Indus' to Alexandria, the 'Precursor' from Suez to Galle, the Bombay' to Singapore and the 'Shanghae' via Batavia to Albany.

3340 c image1853 (July 8) part-entire from England to "Capt H.A. Sanford to the care of W. A. Sanford, Colonial Secretary, Perth, Western Australia" with 'St James' St' London local post handstamp in blue, rated "1/-" packet letter with London 'PAID' cds on the face, unusually not rated for the inwards ship letter rate on arrival, minor blemishes. The previous P&O sailing via Galle had left 4 days prior, and no extra 'via Marseilles' fee was paid, so the letter was carried on the next available service being the 'Viniera' sailing ship (replacing the cancelled Australian Royal Mail Steam Navigation Co contract) to Melbourne, then forwarded by the 'West Wind' to Adelaide and coastal ship to Albany. From their father to Captain Henry Sanford care of his brother William Ayshford Sanford, Western Australia's Colonial Secretary. Captain Henry Sanford was at Toodyay for a period and later operated the Pakington whaling station at Port Gregory between 1854 and 1860 [see also Lots 3335, 3336 & 3344]

Carried on the first P&O contract service directly via Ceylon (the previous two sailings under the contract in early-1853 were via Singapore) by 'Shanghae' which sailed from King George's Sound on 11.10.1853 to Galle, then onwards by 'Bombay' to Suez, overland to Alexandria and 'Euxine' which arrived at Southampton on 24.12.1853.

Carried by clipper ship 'Neleus' to Melbourne arriving 24.12.1853 (nearly wrecked at Shortland's Bluff, Queenscliff), by 'Havilah' to Adelaide and onwards by costal ship. 3343 c image1853 (late) part-entire Consignee's Letter from England to "WA Sanford Esq, Colonial Secretary, Perth, Western Australia" with poorly-struck 'WILLIAM FENOIFE [?] & CO/FORWARDED BY/LONDON' oval handstamp at upper-right, endorsed by the agent "per Isabella Blyth", on arrival rated "4" in red pencil for the inwards ship letter rate, minor blemishes. The Perth Inquirer of 1.2.1854 reports the arrival of the 'Isabella Blyth' via the Cape of Good Hope on 28.1.1854. A postscript to the letter states "I send a box of papers and two reviews - the latter I fear not very interesting".

3344 c image1854 (circa) outer to the "Colonial Secretary, Perth" with a largely fine strike of the 'POST OFFICE/ [crown]/FREMANTLE' undated handstamp (PMI Type PA PO 2a; found only on official mail; late state with inner circle worn-away) in red, light folds and minor marks not affecting the handstamp. Addressed in the handwriting Captain Henry Sanford, who's brother William Ayshford Sanford was Western Australia's Colonial Secretary (between January 1852 and July 1855. Captain Henry Sanford operated the Pakington whaling station at Port Gregory between 1854 and 1860. The item was presumably sent from there (non-contemporary "from Port Gregory" pencil annotation on reverse) by ship, and off-loaded at Fremantle. Neither signed nor endorsed "Free" (as required by the Regulations), but apparently carried as such.

Sanford Esq, Colonial Secretary, Perth, Western Australia" endorsed "Via Marseilles, Via Ceylon or Singapore, Immediate" with 'St James' St' London local post handstamp in blue, all but the last endorsement crossed out & rated "1/-" packet letter with London 'PAID' cds on the face, on arrival rated "4" in red pencil for the inwards ship letter rate, minor folds & blemishes. The letter was 3 weeks too late for the previous P&O sailing via Galle - even forwarding via Marseilles would not catch that ship - and the next was not due to leave for another 6 weeks. Carried on the next available ship being the General Screw Steam Shipping Co 'Bosphorus' to Adelaide where mail to Western Australia was off-loaded and forwarded by coastal ship (as there was no stop at Albany). Sanford Esq, Colonial Secretary, Perth, Western Australia" endorsed "per Bosphorus", rated "1/-" packet letter with London 'PAID' cds on the face, on arrival rated "4" in red pencil for the inwards ship letter rate, ironed-out vertical filing fold otherwise very fine. Carried as a single-voyage contract packet letter by the General Screw Steam Shipping Co 'Bosphorus' via St Vincent, Cape Verde & the Cape of Good Hope to Adelaide where mail to Western Australia was off-loaded and forwarded by coastal ship (as the contract did not provide for a stop at Albany).

3347 c image1854 (Feb 7) part-entire from England to "W Ayshford Sanford Esq, Colonial Secretary, Perth, Western Australia or for HM Sanford Capt" endorsed "via Marseilles / via Singapore" with Embossed 10d brown (SG 57; cut-square; four margins; creased & small closed tears; Cat £3200 on cover) and 1/- green (SG 55; cut-square; margins touching at base & right, large at left & huge at top where creased clear of the design; Cat £1900 on cover) tied by '776' numeral cancels and 'TAUNTON' unframed cds in red on reverse, London transit backstamp of the next day, no arrival markings, horizontal fold affecting stamps as noted otherwise very fine. The rate was 1/5d per ½oz British plus 5d per ¼oz x2 for carriage via French railway to Marseilles and P&O packet via Alexandria, overland and Suez to Singapore, then by P&O contract service via Batavia to Albany. The General Screw Steam Shipping Co 'Bosphorus' had left for Australia 4 days earlier and the next P&O via Galle service sailing for Australia was not due for almost another month, so the extra fee was considered worthwhile. Captain Henry Sanford was the Colonial Secretary's brother (see the three preceding Lots).

Carried by the P&O contract service steamer 'Indus' to Alexandria, overland then 'Bengal' from Suez toGalle, 'Pottinger' to Singapore and 'Madras' arriving at Albany on 5.1.1855. From 1.10.1854 the British Empire 6d per ½oz ship letter rate applied to both contract and private ship letters - with no inland delivery charges to be paid - but this was not extended to Western Australia until 1.6.1856 (see also Lots 3349 & 3351 below). Ex Cecil Walkley. John Bateman was a merchant and later president of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce 1895-1900 as well as being instrumental in establishing the Australian Shipping Association in 1884 and building the Geraldton to Roebourne telepgraph line in 1885. The letter from his supplier states in part "By the Lady Amherst to sail next month I shall ship the balance of the £495 in Ladies boots and shoes ...".

3349 c image1856 (Jan 5) envelope from England to "John Hassell Esq, Albany, King Georges Sound, Western Australia" endorsed "p. Oliver Lang", rated "6"[d] in red ink and a further "6"[d] in red pencil on top with largely very fine London 'PAID' Maltese Cross datestamp on the face, no arrival markings, some light aging & adhesion on back. Sea Captain John Hassell settled in Albany in 1840 and ran sheep. Ex Cecil Walkley. Carried by the Black Ball Line clipper sailing ship 'Oliver Lang' contract service arriving Melbourne 3.4.1856, where mail to Western Australia was off-loaded and forwarded by coastal ship. From 1.10.1854 the British Empire 6d per ½oz ship letter rate applied to both contract and private ship letters - with no inland delivery charges to be paid - but this was not extended to Western Australia until 1.6.1856 (outbound) & 1.10.1856 (homebound) [see Tabeart p.10]. The postal clerk apparently did not notice the exact destination at first, charging only 6d for a ship letter to any of the other Australian colonies, but then added another 6d for the 1/- packet letter rate to Western Australia.

The Melbourne Argus of 26.6.1856 reported that the 'Goldfinder' had left Deal on 25.3.1856 for Port Philip with emigrants (no doubt seeking gold, as the ship's name not so subtly advertised). Not endorsed "Consignee's Letter" as required for free carriage acompanying goods, and presumably carried privately contrary to postal regulations by one of the ship's passengers. Ex Cecil Walkley.

Having lost several masts in a severe gale, she spent 10 days at Lisbon for repairs, and the whole journey took 110 days. Carried by P&O service 'Vectis' from Marseilles to Alexandria (the 'Massilia' having left England 6 days before this was posted), overland to Suez and 'Ottawa' arriving at Albany on 6.6.1860. Ex Cecil Walkley. The Geraldine Lead Mine at Ajana (around 100kms N of Geraldton) began operations in 1849, with the Warribanno Smelter (whose chimney still stands) constructed nearby shortly thereafter. The flooding of the Murchison River on several occasions & the hazards of Port Gregory for shipping coupled with commodity market fluctuations resulted in the mine being abandoned in 1875, re-opened in 1910, then closed in 1922.
