3331 c image1839 (Jan 7) cross-written entire headed "Yorkshire Western Australia" and signed "T Carter" to Norfolk, England endorsed "YR 1/8/39" [York River ?] at lower-left and "d6" in red at upper-left for the inland rate paid, very fine 'INDIA LETTER/PORTSMOUTH' boxed handstamp in black on face, London 'E/23JY23/1839' transit on reverse, rated "1/3"[d] for the 4d India Ship Letter rate plus 11d British inland delivery fee, a few minor edge faults & blemishes. The York Post Office did not open until -.6.1840, and the "YR" endorsement was presumably applied by the sender (unusually with the date in 'American' format). In this early period, overseas mails were dependent on the infrequent calls of trading vessels. This letter was almost certainly carried on the 'Lavinia' which arrived at Portsmouth from the Cape of Good Hope on 23.7.1839. Dr Thomas Carter arrived -.7.1830 on the 'Medina' with two servants. In 1832 he took up 3,700 acres on the Avon River in Yorkshire [the district around York, WA]. He and his brother Henry became leading pastoralists in the Avon District, and in 1841 Thomas was the secretary of the York Agricultural Society. Later his ventures extended to mining, importing, agencies for shipping & insurance, and a soap & manure factory in Fremantle, where he was chairman of the Town Trust in 1855. In this letter he states in part "... The last [season] has been very dry not having had rain enough to make what we call the rivers run ... many of them becoming salt ... [but] sheep and stock where properly managed have done very well. I sent down ... some of the best mutton I have ever seen in the colony some were sold for £3 each ...".

3333 c image1843 (Jan 7) entire from William & Hester Tanner to England without any local markings, 'SHIP LETTER' handstamp and London '24AU24/1843' transit and re-direction markings from Bath to Andover and then to "Kimbery, Berks" on reverse, variously rated "8"[d] then "9"[d] and finally "10"[d] inland charges to pay, minor blemishes. The letter written by both starts "I write with the chance of this being in time to go by the Trusty which we hear sails tomorrow ...". The ship took 223 days to reach England. William Tanner arrived per 'Drummore' on 1.2.1831 with his wife Hester (nee Viveash) and took up major landholdings on the Swan River, in the Avon District and the interior. He was a member of the Legislative Council, but later fell into ill-health & financial difficulties. He returned to England for a time from 1835 to 1838, then again to Western Australia, and finally back to England where he died in 1845. Charles & Ellen Viveash (his sister, who had married his wife's brother) emigrated with them in 1831, then settled in Van Diemen's Land, and returned to England in 1838. Parts of their family correspondences have been published as 'The Tanner Letters - A Pioneer Saga of Swan River & Tasmania' (University of WA Press, 1981).

3336 c image1852 (Feb 4) entire from Captain Henry Sanford with added dateline "Toodyay Feb 4th 1852", to England endorsed "Overland via Southampton" with a largely fine strike of 'SHIP LETTER/[crown]/WESTERN AUSTRALIA/PAID' undated handstamp (PMI Type PA SL 1) in red, London '1 JY 1/1852' arrival in red where rated "8"[d] due, very fine. Scarce mail from inland. The endorsement indicates the item was intended to be carried to Singapore to join the P&O packet mails to England, but the 'SHIP LETTER' marking shows that it was carried by private ship, confirmed by the 8d British inland delivery charge (the packet rate was 1/-). The letter states in part "I send this on a chance of a ship sailing for Singapore or India with directions to Aysh [his brother William Ayshford Sanford, Western Australia's Colonial Secretary, who presumably added the "Toodyay" dateline] to forward it ... I have accepted a position under Captain Henderson in the Convict Dept ... it is often with difficulty I can feed my men at all, and sometimes so nearly starved that I half expect a mutiny ... I should have been coining money nearly as fast as the most successful at Port Phillip. The people in this country are, I hear, going mad about the reports and endeavouring to get to the Golden District the shortest road ... I may try my luck too ...". Northam & Toodyay PO opened 1847, however the earliest known marking is from 19.10.1852, and this item was not processed there. Whether this was simply because the item was carried privately, or perhaps because the Post Office was not functioning at the time, is unclear.

Although not endorsed "Free", the item was signed on the face by the sender (as required by the Regulations). Richard McBride Broun (or "Brown") was the Collector of Customs at Fremantle until his death in 1858. His brother Peter Nicholas Broun had been the original Colonial Secretary of the new Colony until retiring in 1846 & dying later that year.
