3178 c image1914 (Oct) usage of Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force 'Bush Hut Fernshaw Victoria' picture postcard by Australian serviceman Clarry Seaton with message dated "31-10-14", to Victoria carried by Adelaide - Melbourne express train with a largely very fine strike of 'ENG MAIL TPO/IN -7DE14/VIC' cds and Melbourne 'PASSED' censor handstamp in violet, unfranked and taxed on arrival with Melbourne 'T1D' oval cachet and Postage Due 1d with pencil cancel affixed, a couple of minor aging marks. Australian servicemen were not afforded free letter postage privileges until February 1915, but unfranked letters from servicemen overseas or en route were charged only single deficiency payable by the addressee. The card was written the day before the first troopship convoy left Albany (WA) but not forwarded until over a month later: this was a common practice of "censorship by delay of the mails".
