3207 c imagePOSTAL HISTORY: 1846 (Aug 30) tiny 'ladies' envelope used locally to "Bligh Street" with fine strike of 'POST PAID/AT SYDNEY' boxed handstamp in red rated "2"[d] and light but very fine ' 1 /O CLOCK' cachet alongside, large-part very fine '[crown]/GENERAL POST OFF[ICE]/SYDNEY' datestamp on reverse (because there was simply no more room on the face), a couple of very minor blemishes & miniscule pen annotation on reverse. A Two Penny Post was established in Sydney in 1831. From 1.1.1850 the rate was reduced to 1d per ½oz up to 1oz and 2d per 1oz thereafter. After -.7.1839, time markings were used only on local Sydney letters, the '1 o'clock' indicating that the item was posted before the the afternoon delivery and would be delivered later that day. One of the smallest 'covers' we have seen, and certainly the earliest such item we know about.

NSW retained half the postage on mail carried by private ships, hence the '3'[d] marking. Accountancy was abolished from 1.1.1857, each administration retaining the whole of the pre-paid postage.  (2)
