2462 = imageNaracoorte: Mordan-type 'MOSQUITO PLAINS/MY20/1862/=STH-AUSTRALIA=' (rated RRRR; LRD) light but largely very fine strike on piece with Perkins Bacon Rouletted 6d violet-blue x2 (pair?) tied by light but discernible Diamond Numeral '59' (rated R). Replaced Mosquito Plains 1.10.1861. The datestamp continued in use for about 18 months.

2463 c imageNew Luxemburg: squared-circle 'NEW LUXEMBURG/AU19/95/S-A' (rated RRRR; recorded for 13 months only) two very fine to superb strikes on cover-front to Woodside with De La Rue Perf 10 2d orange, two significant tonespots well clear of the datestamps. PO 1.8.1895; closed 22.10.1896. [Gold was discovered near Olary and the New Luxemburg Mine was operating by 1891. It is surprising that the PO did not open until four years later]

Replaced Port Darwin Camp (on the Pine Creek Diggings) as PO 1.6.1884; closed 31.8.1889. Four later openings were as Telegraph Offices only. [60km SE of Adelaide River]

Howley Creek (2) PO 1888; closed 6.3.1894. No markings are recorded from the first office, open only in 1874; or the third office opened 1.10.1894; closed 30.6.1896.

TO 22.8.1872; PO 1.4.1883; replaced by Emungalan 5.1.1925; Katherine (2) replaced Emungalan 13.6.1927.

PO 1.7.1886; RO -.1.1910; PO 1.7.1927; renamed Roper Bar -.8.1969. [Remote settlement inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria, more than 300km E of Katherine, then a similar distance NNE to Darwin. The dearth of reliable coastal vessels meant the long overland route, taking almost a month, was used]

Telegraph camp at Boomlera, 12 miles (20km) S of Darwin. The Handbook states that this office was replaced (?) by Burrundie, almost 200km further SE of Darwin.

The cds was returned to service when Union Reef (2) operated 1.10.1883; closed 2.11.1887. The rating is across both periods, and probably should be RRRRR in either period. [Gold mining, 15km N of Pine Creek]

2476 c imageNorwood: Mordan-style 'NORWOOD/DE30/1861/=SOUTH-AUSTRALIA=' cds (rated RRRR; ERD and the earlier of only two recorded examples on cover) very fine strike showing damage in two places & equally fine Diamond Numeral '10' (R) on Perkins Bacon Rouletted 2d pale red on cover (flap missing) to "Dr Blood/Kapunda" with a light but clear 25mm 'KAPUNDA/ DE30/1861/S-A' cds (RRR; B1). PO 1.8.1853. '10' was originally assigned to Kensington (2), and transferred to Norwood some time after that office was reduced to an RO in 1856: see Lot 2373. The deliciously-named Dr Matthew Henry Smyth-Blood arrived in 1848 & took a position as Mine Doctor at Kapunda where, apart from a stint in NSW, he became a prominent citizen. He was first Master of the local masonic lodge & Lord Mayor of Kapunda. He was also a celebrated photographer.
