Moonta Mines (1) was apparently renamed Moonta 1.4.1867, the same day Moonta Mines (2) opened.

2445 c imageMoorunde: postmaster's endorsement "PO Moorunde/July 21st 1856" (the earlier of only two such recorded manuscripts but the other has been enhanced) with Perkins Bacon London Printing 6d deep blue (almost full margins, clipped corner at upper-left) tied by indistinct Diamond Numeral '39' on cover to Scotland, 'PAID/LIVERPOOL/SHIP/NO21/1856' tombstone in red ties the stamp & 'd3' accountancy handstamp also in red, very fine Edinburgh transit & indistinct 'PRESTON-PANS' arrival backstamp. PO 1.1.1855; transferred to Blanchetown 1858. A very attractive First Issue cover.

2446 PSE imageMorgan: unframed 20mm (not 21mm as in the Handbook) 'NORTH-WEST-BEND/MY15/79/S.A.' very fine strike & another lesser strike on Postal Card 1d violet to Adelaide, part 'RAILWAY/MY15/79/S-A' transit backstamp, minor faults & staining clear of the datestamps, the message headed "Morgan". Replaced North-West Bend 17.9.1878. Rated RR but that is from its introduction circa 1862. The cds was in use after the name change for about two years only.

2447 c imageMortlock: framed 27mm 'MORTLOCK/FE10/--/S.A' (rated RRRR) two fine to very fine strikes on De La Rue 1d red on postcard with message headed "Edillilie/10.2.10", corner creases clear of the markings. RO 27.1.1908; PO -.11.1908; renamed Edillilie 1.9.1910. This must have been one of the last squared-circles issued (the corners were probably removed before it was sent out).

2448 c imageMosquito Plains: Mordan-type 'MOSQUITO-PLAINS/AU16/1860/=STH AUSTRALIA=' cds (rated RRRR) largely fine strike & similar Diamond Numeral '58' cancel just tying Perkins Bacon Rouletted 6d violet-blue to cover to England, GPO transit in blue & very fine ' H8 /LIVERPOOL/22OC/60' arrival backstamp, flap removed. PO 22.3.1853; renamed Narracoorte 1.10.1861 where the cds continued in use until at least MY20/1862. The cds is rated across both periods & should be significantly scarcer from this initial period: only three covers are recorded across both periods: see also Lot 2462. Ex John Bell: sold at our auction of 14.11.2014 for $570.
