Kangaroo Island: unframed 20mm 'KINGSCOTE/18/AU23/74/S-A' (possibly over-rated at RRRRR; inverted '2') very fine strike on cover, De
La Rue Perf 10 2d orange and indistinct Diamond Numeral '307' cancel, the reverse with transits of 'CYGNET RIVER/AU30' (RR) & 'HOG-BAY/AU31' (R) both on the island, 'CAPE JERVIS' (RRR) & 'SECOND VALLEY' both of SP5/74, GPO & 'PORT ADELAIDE' arrival
both of SP7, minor defects. A marvellous Kangaroo Island cover with a combination of scarce to extremely rare datestamps. Kingscote (2) early-1871; closed -.2.1884. Cygnet River (1) 1870; RO -.10.1910. Hog Bay 1860; renamed Penneshaw 18.10.1904. Cape
Jervis (1) PO -.11.1873; TO 1.4.1917. Second Valley transferred from Rapid Bay (1) -.9.1867. [See also Lots 2344, 2366 and 2374]
The route was 12km SW to Cygnet River; 40km as the crow flies but more than 50km by road SE to Muston & NE to Hog Bay (Penneshaw), by ship 20km NE to Cape Jervis, overland 15km NE to Second Valley, then presumably by land to Adelaide. It took 8 days
on the island; there was a 5-day delay before a ship came by, a total of 13 days to go 100km; then two days more for the second half of the journey. NB: '307' is rated 'C' but that includes later usage at the GPO, which is common. Usage on the island
should probably be RR-RRR, and only four examples on cover have been recorded.

Kanmantoo: Mordan-type 'STAUGHTON/JY9/1856/=SOUTH-AUSTRALIA=' cds (rated RRRR) very fine strike & almost as fine Diamond Numeral '53'
cancel (RR, but the only recorded 'tie' to the Staughton cds on cover) on Perkins Bacon London Printing 2d rose-carmine SG 2 (margins close to large), on entire to Adelaide with GPO arrival backstamp of JY10/1856. A remarkably fine First Issue usage.
Kanmantoo replaced Staughton 13.10.1855. Both the numeral & the cds continued in service at the new office. The ratings are across both periods, but use of the Staughton cds at Kanmantoo was for less than two years & should be rated higher (RRRRR).
The letter is headed "Kanmantoo 8 July 1856" & is signed "Will Giles Jnr", who owned land & oversaw local mining operations of the South Australian Company, of which his father, William Giles Snr, was the manager.
