LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
2261 c image1908 (Dec) usage of tinselled greetings postcard to Wayville with De La Rue 1d pink tied by indistinct Port Lincoln squared-circle, magnificent 'DELIVERY PROHIBITED' handstamp in red and 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/DE 22/08/ADELAIDE' cds in red alongside. The tinsel had a tendency to 'shed' and clog-up machine cancellers, so the mailing of such postcards was banned. [The message is from a son to his mother: "...buy yourself Christmas present from me like last year..."]

Illustrated in 'Shilling Violet' (June 1994). [Until the Soviets adopted the Gregorian/European Calendar in -.02.1918, Russia used the Julian Calendar, which was 13 days behind. "Kieff" is Kyiv, capital of modern Ukraine, which finally achieved independence from Russia on 24.8.1991]

2267 PSE image1910 (Dec 21) usage of highly-surfaced Postal Card 1d brown to "Rio Tinto Mines/Haelva/Spain" without the required additional ½d franking, Adelaide cds & superb 'T/10CTS'-in-circle, 'LISTA/25ENE11/(HUELVA)' arrival cds  & '10 CTMOS' handstamp both on the face. In most periods, Spain is a much scarcer destination than its significantly smaller neighbour Portugal. Minas de Riotinto has been since Phoenician times (!) a copper-mining centre in Andalucia in SW Spain. In 1873 British investors purchased a mine complex at Rio Tinto. From these modest beginnings grew today's massive Rio Tinto Group. The message is a personal note from former South Australian Premier & Supreme Court judge, Sir James Penn Boucaut, but penned & signed by his secretary. The addressee, William Giles Nash, wrote a history of the Rio Tinto mines, published in 1904, and Boucaut had visited Spain in 1905.

Believed to be the earliest express cover from South Australia. The rate was 6d, & the service indicated by two vertical lines that in later times were applied in blue-pencil.

2269 c image1912 (July 1) cover to Argentina with De La Rue 2½d indigo & Tall Stamps Thick 'POSTAGE' 3d olive tied by Adelaide cds, red/white R label 'No 1' (damaged before being affixed), two Buenos Aires arrival backstamps of 31JUL1912 & AGO2/1912 and a largely indistinct boxed handstamp in Spanish, creased at lower-right. The rate was 2½d UPU letter plus 3d registration fee. [If the cover was sent via America or London, it is hard to believe it arrived in 30 days. Perhaps it was carried by a ship going directly to Argentina, which would explain the absence of transit markings]
