Shepherd's Inn 17.2.1859. [According to the Handbook, the numeral was first allocated to Hope Valley (1) PO 1849; replaced by Old Shepherd's Inn PO 1.1.1856. Examples have not been recorded for either allocation, despite which this example is
illustrated under all three offices.

slate-blue SG 10 (margins clear to large, except at right where a little cut-into, with a fragment of the adjoining unit below) on mourning cover to "John Dampster/[sic]/Post Office/Portland Victoria" with faint to very fine strike of the Mordan-type
'INMAN VALLEY/NO8/1859/=STH AUSTRALIA=' cds (RRRR), GPO transit of NO9/1859 and oval 'PORTLAND/[crown]/NO.21/1859/VICTORIA' arrival backstamp. NSW raised its inter-colonial rate by all routes to 6d per ½oz on 1.1.1855; presumably this rate applied
from South Australia also. One of the most outstanding cds/numeral 'tie' covers. PO circa 1.1.1855. [The addressee, John Dempster, had been a teacher at St Peter's Collegiate School in Adelaide. By 1857 he was running a Boarding School, Ivy House, in
Portland]

affixed) to small piece. PO 1859: '118' transferred from McGrath's Flat (1) PO PO 1858; closed 1859. The Handbook states "No illustration available" but this is the example shown under McGrath's Flat!, but the stamp was issued in 1860 so it couldn't
have been used there. And '161 was allocated to McGrath's Flat (2) TO 20.1.1862; PO 17.6.1862; closed 31.3.1882.

in the Handbook at 'R', which appears to be an egregious error. '212' was not recorded by Campbell & Pearce, and this appears to be the only recorded strike. The only cds recorded is from Lewiston (3), in 1911. [Named after Postmaster-General James
