1901 (July 31) stampless cover with beautiful embossed 'GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF AUSTRALIA/[Coat of Arms]' in blue on the flap, to England
with a largely very fine strike of the scarce triple-circle 'GOVERNOR-GENERAL/[arms]/FRANK STAMP/AUSTRALIA' cachet in blue, Adelaide cds alongside, 'HENLEY- ON-THAMES' & faint 'REHENHAM PLACE' arrival backstamps both of SP1/02, on the same day
forwarded to "Market-Weston/Thretford" with 'HENLEY-ON-THAMES - 355' duplex, minor opening tears. A very important cover, being the only recorded usage of the Governor-General's Frank in South Australia: see 'Shilling Violet' (August 2018).
The 7th Earl of Hopetoun, formerly Governor of Victoria (1889-95), was appointed as Australia's first Governor-General. He arrived at Sydney in December 1900, where he took possession of the Frank. At that point, he was merely Governor-General-elect
& 'Australia' had yet to be created. Despite these 'technicalities', both Hopetoun & his wife abused the franking privilege while in Sydney. Expending huge sums of his own money to impress the Duke & Duchess of York during their Royal Visit for the
opening of the first federal parliament (on 9.5.1901), he was offended when his request for reimbursement was rejected, which was the direct cause of his resignation and return to England. Mark Diserio has confirmed this is the only usage of the
Frank in South Australia, and has advised that this is one of only three usages outside NSW or Victoria, the others being in Queensland & Tasmania, both from Hopetoun's tour in Aug-Sep 1901.
'Shilling Violet' states that Hopetoun's successor, the South Australian Governor Lord Hallam Tennyson (son of the great poet), "evidently had a supply" of pre-franked envelopes, one of which came to be used in Adelaide, two weeks after Hopetoun's
departure. The suggestion is that the sender was the tutor of Tennyson's three sons, who was later to marry the addressee, Mary Everard. However, this is not the tutor's handwriting: being quite child-like, it suggests that at least the addressing
of the envelope was by one of the Tennyson progeny. Whatever the case, it was almost certainly an unauthorised usage of the franking privilege. NB: all Australian Franks were withdrawn on 30.10.1902.

1903 (Feb 23) entire small book 'The Knight of the Southern Cross and Other Poems' by Lyell Dunne (1901) 60pp hard-bound with a
dust-jacket fashioned from brown-paper endorsed "Booklet only", sent unsecured to Melbourne with De La Rue 2d violet tied by a faint Diamond Numeral & 'CRAFERS/SA' squared-circle alongside, the book is 15mm thick with minor separation within & the
wrapper has some damage at the top. One of the most unusual lots in the collection. The inter-State book post rate was 1d per 2oz x2. [The sender inscribed the fly-leaf "To dear Mrs Ross from her own old friend Eliza Milne". Her husband, Sir William
Milne, was a member of both South Australian Houses of Parliament. They had 11 children. The Victoria Coffee Palace was next door to the Melbourne Town Hall. If the lack of online entries is anything to go by, the book is very scarce: there is a copy
in the National Library in Canberra]

1904 three covers to Tattersalls agents in Hobart endorsed 1) "Officially Registered/Suspected containing Bank Notes" and taxed 6d; 2)
".../Supposed to contain coin" and taxed 10d; and, most unusually, 3) front only, ".../Supposed to contain postal note" and taxed 6d, but with the endorsement & tax markings crossed-out; the first with 'PT PIRIE WEST' squared-circle, the others from
Port Pirie. Stated to be the only three known pre-1913 Officially Registered items from South Australia (and confirmed by Martin Walker). The regulations required that 'valuables' (including coins & banknotes) must to be sent by registered mail, but
specifically excluded Money Orders & Postal Notes from these provisions (presumably because these were made out to a named party, similat to a cheque). Accordingly, the last item was improperly endorsed & taxed, and subsequently corrected. (3)

Societe Royal Malacologique de Belgique with rare solo franking of De La Rue Tall Stamps Thin 'POSTAGE' 10d pale orange (ACSC unpriced on cover) tied by badly worn Adelaide cds, repaired 20mm tear at top-centre. The Book Post rate to British Empire
