V image½d green with Cracked Electro in Left Wattles (Early State) [Pos 5L46] ACSC 63(5)k (SG 20e), very well-centred, neat corner cds cancel well clear of the variety, Cat $5000 (£4000). Superb. The crack does not yet extend to the 'U' of 'AUSTRALIA'. This is the state illustrated in the ACSC. Michael Drury Certificate (2013). Possibly the finest example of this state of the variety in existence.

V image½d bluish green with Cracked Electro from Left Wattles to 'U' of 'AUSTRALIA' [Pos 5L46] ACSC 63(5)k (SG 20e later state), neat corner cds cancel well clear of the variety, Cat $5000 (£4000). The crack now extends up to the top edge of the design and down to the oval. Arthur Gray's example - minor wrinkles - sold as the previously-listed ACSC 63(5)h in 2015 for $2023.

G image½d green with Cracked Electro from Left Wattles through Kangaroo's Face to Forearm (Late State) [Pos 5L46] ACSC 63C(5)ka (SG 20e later state), well-centred, light but indistinct cds cancel largely clear of the variety, Cat $6000 (£4000). The crack now extends down through the oval and into the Kangaroo's body. The ACSC comments in footnote 3 that this advanced state "is rare on Single Watermark paper, since the majority of printings in this state were on Large Multiple Watermark paper. The unit was substituted by Harrison, apparently prior to his first printing, and therefore does not occur in the scarcer Harrison printing on Single Watermark paper" [our emphasis]. However, Lot 221 below proves that the early Harrison printings still included this Cracked Electro. This is the only example of the advanced state on Single Watermark paper in the Andrew Johnston collection. In his opinion, it was "probably printed by Harrison". [See the next Lot for an example of the Substituted Cliché inserted in its place]

G image½d green with unlisted variety Substituted Cliché (Weak Right Frame) inserted in place of the Cracked Electro from Left Wattles to Kangaroo's Forearm [Pos 5L46], minor bend at upper-right hardly detracts, light Mingenew (WA) cds cancel largely clear of the variety. The Cracked Electro from Left Wattles unit was the subject of extensive research by Andrew Johnston. For further details of this flaw, its development, repair & substitution, see Lot 182 below. Because the Electro 5 Substituted Clichés were inserted by Harrison, they can exist on Single Watermark paper only from his rare May 1918 printing. The only other similar variety is the Thin Fraction at Right, Cat $15,000 used [see next Lot]. The only example of a Substituted Cliché on Single Watermark paper in the Andrew Johnston collection.

F image½d yellow green with Thin Fraction at Right [Pos 5R43] ACSC 63(5)s (SG 20d), large-part very fine 'NHILL/VI[C]' cds cancel well clear of the variety, Cat $15,000 (£8500). A superb example of this iconic rarity. The ACSC states in footnote 4 that this is " ... a bump retouch ... undertaken by Harrison prior to his first printing from Electro 5, probably at the same time as the substitution of the 5L46 Cracked Electro [see previous Lot]. It thus occurs on Single Watermark paper only on the rare May 1918 printing. At present [2022] ... at least nine used examples, including [in] a pair, can be recorded."

Possibly the only punctured 'OS' example known of this iconic rarity. PCNZA Certificate (2023). Gibbons lists & prices the variety unpunctured, but does not include it in its listing of official stamps. The ACSC simply states that "Stamps from all electros are found punctured OS" and is silent on whether any of the nine recorded used examples of the Thin Fraction variety on Single Watermark paper are punctured 'OS'. For more information about this 'bump retouch' see Lot 91 above, an unpunctured example. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4)
