The writer was a Jewish-German Dunera Boy transported from internment in England in July 1940. The Dunera Boys were eventually released into Army service in Australia or repatriated to England in mid-1943.

1287 = image1941 (Nov 3) Food Parcel Label 'Customs Declaration' black/pink form stating contents "2 cream 1 coffee 1 asparagus 1½ sugar 2 tins paste" & weight "5" lbs, to England with KGVI 2d red & 1/4d magenta pair (right-hand unit with minor faults) and 9d Platypus tied by three largely very fine strikes of 'YUNGABURRA/QUEENSLAND' cds, removed from the parcel wrapping, two repaired tears at base do not unduly detract. The rate was 3/7d for a parcel weighing between 3 to 7 pounds. Much scarcer than the 5/10d rate for parcels weighing over 7lbs up to the 11lbs maximum. Virtually all such parcels were sent as part of the 1946 'Food For Britain' campaign: this is one of the earliest such items we have seen.

1288 long cover image1941 (Jan 29) Australian Red Cross Society 'Message Service' long-format envelope airmail to the Swiss Red Cross, Geneva with printed endorsement for carriage by PanAm Trans-Pacific & Trans-Atlantic Clippers and QE 1d green, 9d Platypus, 1/- Lyrebird and Robes 5/- & 10/- tied by Melbourne cds, censored locally with 'Opened ...' red/white resealing label tied by 'PASSED ...' handstamp at left, Lisbon '-8JAN.42' transit backstamp then onwards by rail, minor bends from bulky contents. The rate was 5/8d for the first ½oz plus 5/7d per additional ½oz. However, the item missed the California Clipper which left Auckland on 24.11.1941 and was the last to carry mail before the service was suspended after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. Presumably carried by the Matson Line SS 'Mariposa' which left New Zealand for the USA immediately after the attack, then by US domestic airmail to New York and PanAm Atlantic Clipper to Portugal.
